    1. [VTFRANKL] re: Swanton marriage cert
    2. bcomeau
    3. I have in my possession a marriage certificate signed in 1873. It has the name of L.E. Dickinson as being the officiant and that it was a religious ceremoney. Does anyone know who L.E. Dickinson might be? Was he a minister? The marriage cert. was for Frank B. Root and Sabra Michael in the town of Swanton, Vt. Betty

    1. [VTFRANKL] Descendants of Melissa Lahue
    2. James Lahue/Austin/IBM
    3. Another inquiry for the group. Melissa Lahue was the daughter of Peter Lahue (i.e., Pierre Lague) and Amanda Ranville (i.e, Monique Rainville). She shows up in the 1850 Vermont census living in her father's household in Richford.. She next shows up in the 1860 census in her father's household in Berkshire. However, she now has the last name of Collette. With her are three children (all named Collette): Napoleon (age 9), Charles (age 7) and Jeremiah (age 1). The Vermont Vital Records has a marriage record for her showing her marrying a Jerry Collette in Aug 1850. I haven't found Jerry in the 1860 census. A couple weeks ago, information came up that said that Jerry Collette had enlisted in one of the Vermont regiments, was captured and then died in Andersonville Prison. The records for Andersonville show that a Joseph Collette, from VT, died there in June 1864. Supposedly, Melissa remarried to a "Jeprhion" Laviolette (or Lovelett), moved to Minnesota, had more children there and then moved back to Vermont. So, I'm looking to see if anyone is following the Collette, Laviolette and Lovelett families and whether anyone has information on what happened to the three Collette boys and who might be descended from Melissa Lahue and Jephrion Laviolette. Also, I'm trying to find out where in Minnesota that they moved to and where they came back to in Vermont. Thanks for any replies. Jim Lahue

    1. [VTFRANKL] Re: VTFRANKL-D Digest V00 #139
    2. James Lahue/Austin/IBM
    3. Jerry, Thanks for the response. Celestin is probably the key person here. His baptism record showed up in the American-French Genealogy Society journal (Je Me Souviens) this year. No other record of Celestin has shown up. The 1850 Vermont census shows a Silas in the household of Peter Laheu. No other record of Silas has shown up. And then, Lester shows up in the 1860 Vermont census. None of the ages for the three people match up quite right but it is probable that all three people are the same person. It is just hard to find absolute proof in a situation where absolute proof probably doesn't exist. I've been working with Andree Routledge (and others) on the Lahue families of Vermont and it is definite that the Lahues are part of the Lague family. Thanks again. Jim Lahue

    3. Cindy and Fellow Listers: I am researching the Skeels family in Highgate with regard to the ancestors of Orin Green SKEELS, b.7/22/1806, Highgate, VT d. 6/1/1898, Highgate, VT; m. Lois/Louise HASKIN 10/3/1833 Highgate, VT. She died 11/8/1886 AE 71 - 9 - 8. Orin was the son of David SKEELS, b. 1779 Lanesboro, MA., d. 4/12/1854 Highgate, VT, m. 6/8/1804 Martha GREENE, daughter of Jonathan and Martha (White) GREENE and a descendant of General Nathaniel GREENE. Martha was b. March 1784 and died in Canada 2/22/1868. David and Martha are buried at Highgate Falls Cem.; Orin and Lois/Louise are buried at Highgate Center Cem. References are made in Aldrich's History of Franklin and Grande Isle Counties p. 721, that "The Skeelses were originally from Wales and Amos, David and John emigrated to America previous to the Revolutionary War, settling at Lanesboro, Mass. At the beginning of the present century David, a descendant of one of these three came to Highgate.. . . " There is also this reference in the Gazeteer for Franklin and Grande Isle Counties, p. 131:" David Skeels from Lanesboro, Mass, came to this town at an early date, with his family, which consisted of three sons, David Jr., Amos, and William, and six daughters." There are several David's, Amos's and William's in the cemeteries of Highgate and Swanton as well as these town's records, so it is hard to connect these families. In Aldrich, History of Franklin and Grande Isle Counties, p. 769 there is information on "William Skeels, son of David and Lydia (Powell) Skeels, who came to Highgate in 1806 and was born in Lanesboro, Mass, where he lived several years and finally came to Charlotte, VT. At the age of 20 years he came to Highgate, VT, where he lived until his death, aged 68. He served as Minuteman at the battle of Plattsburg. He married Rachel Best of Highgate, daughter of Rev. Thomas and Marion (Hyatt) Best." (There is more information on this family in this article if anyone wants it.) Vermont Vital Records have the marriage of William Skeels and Rachel Best in Highgate 12/10/1828 by Samuel Weaver, Minister of the Gospel, no parents named. There are also two cemetery card references to the death of William Skeels; William Skeels farmer b. Lanesboro father David, mother Lydia b. 4/2/1792, d. 6/10/1860 67 yrs 2 mo Highgate Ctr. Cem; William Skeels d. 6/7/1860 68 yrs., 2 mo. 5 da. Highgate Center Cem. This may be the same William Skeels. Rachel Skeels dies at age 82 on 3/4/1879, dau of Thomas and Maureen (sic)Best. In my search I also found a reference to David Skeels in DAR Vol. 118, p. 36 through Ancestry.com as follows: DAR ID Number 117109: David Skeels (1746-1833) served as a private under Captains Newell and Wheeler, Colonel Symonds regiment on Massachusetts regiment of militia. He was born in Woodbury, CT and died in Highgate, VT. 4. David Skeels m. Lydia Powell 3. Amos Skeels m. 1805 Catherine Green (1787-1827) 2. William Skeels (1825-1906) m. Charlotte Russell(1827 - 1904) 1. Lucius William Skeels (1857-1902) m. Lucy Roba Hastings (b. 1852) Nellie Skeels Thompson B. Swanton VT Wife of George Zadock Thompson. >From Highgate records: Charlotte E. Russell m. William Skeels 12/7/1847. Charlotte Russell d.1/27/1904 dau of John Russell and Elizabeth Barr AE 76-9-21 cem card. We have two Davids, two Lydia's and two Williams in the above. Lydia Powell is mentioned as the wife of David Skeels in two of my references. I don't know if she is the same Lydia mentioned by Cindy. David's dates are the same but Lydia's maiden name is different. If anyone can connect these families please let me know. I do have some more information on other Skeels from this area from vital records as well. If anyone has information on the parents of David Skeels, b. in 1779 and who married Martha Greene, I would appreciate the information. Thank you. Martha

    3. Aloha Cindy, Suggest that you go to Salle Gagnon at the Central Library on East Sherbrooke St, Montreal or the Tuesday evening session at the library of the Vermont French-Canadian Genealogical Society, lakeside in S. Burlington, VT (I can get the exact address for you) and look in the Blue Drouin series, or Loiselle Index, or the marriage repertoire of St Francois for the marriage of Michel CHARRON and Matilda (anything that sounds like MARCO) circa 1853. Watch it because there is a St Francois on the Ile d'Orleans. If you find the marriage you'll also get the names of their parents, thus a start on the preceding generation. 2. >From Afa -- florab@kootenay.com << Researching Caleb GODDARD, my husband's 3rd g-grandfather. Caleb GODDARD b. April 16, 1798, possibly Lyman NH. His parents were John and Lucy (STILES) GODDARD. He married Avis HINCKLEY December 29, 1818 place unknown. <snip> ... >> -->> There are several GODARD/GODDARD listings in the book "Georgia, Vermont Vital Records" compiled by Peter S Mallett. Several of them say they were "trans. to Evangelical Church in west, Sept. 11, 1853". Those entries are for: Avis, Caleb, Charlotte Elizabeth, Julia Maria, Samuel Newel and Warren Caleb. All refer in turn to "CC" which is Mallett's key to primary records at the "Congregational Church". The above is the only data entry for Caleb GODDARD - thus no birth, marriage or death civil listings for him noted in Georgia, VT in this compilation. The nice thing about this book is that there are compilations of both civil and church records. [Available via the Genealogical Society of Vermont. Published in 1995] Note that besides the above notation for Charlotte Elizabeth Goddard in 1853, there are also two entries for an "Charlotte E." as follows: << Charlotte E., dis. Apr. 28, 1850, west west; CC >> and << Charlotte E., trans. from Presbyterian Church in Freeport, 1B, Nov. 7, 1852; CC >> The only other remaining GODDARD listings are for: Alfred, Elisha A., James (baptism & noted as son of Caleb & Avis), John, Minna B., Nancy, Samuel N. and finally, Samuel N. again. [All the GODARD/GODDARD listings noted here are on pg 114 of the book] Additional note: there are 2 1/2 full pages of HINCKLEY/HINCKLY listings with both civil and church references. There is one entry for an "Avis", but is noted as a male, not a female! It is as follows: << Avis, s. of Ira and Elizabeth, b. Nov. 4, 1793, in Saybrook, Conn.; V1 & V2 >> The end notations refer to Volumes 1 and 2 of the Town Civil Records. Hope that adds a few more pieces to ponder in your family puzzle... debbie CAhobbies@aol.com

    3. Hello My interest are in the following family: Benjamin Smith (Sr.) died in Enosburg, Franklin, Vermont about Dec 24, 1814 and his Wife, Hannah who died about Dec 21, 1831 in Enosburg, Franklin, Vermont. Benjamin Smith, son of Benjamin Smith (Sr) and was born in Rhode Island. He married Abigail Blake in Vermont about 1826 (unknown where) and died in Berkshire, Franklin, Vermont about May 11, 1855. Abigail was born in Stafford, Orange, Vermont and died somewhere in Vermont about Jun 1857. Benjamin M. Smith, son of above Benjamin Smith. I know when he married and whom, I know when he died. I believe he had a sister, Eliza Jane Smith who may have married a George Avery Jr. No further info and her. I am sure that there would have been other children, but unknown who they were. Now, Benjamin Smith (Sr.) had at least two other sons. Elisha Smith who married Lydia Tyler Wedge and Jonathan Smith. I believe Jonathan may have been a doctor and was married to someone named Betsy. I believe this was all in Vermont. *Laura Hauser-Melton* Genealogy-where you confuse the dead and irritate the living. **author unknown**

    3. Aloha Mary, Sounds like you may be looking at Franco-Americans. GOODROE=GAUDREAU and BUSHEY=BOUCHER or BOUSQUET. Seems to me that you need to find either the church or civil record of the marriage of Joseph and Julia. That marriage likely occurred in Quebec and likely about 1854. Use the French names if you search in Quebec. Where do you live? Maybe I can lead you to some resources for researching Quebec marriages.
