    1. [VTFRA] Need help looking up a marriage and birth/baptism record in Swanton, VT abt. 1846

Author: Sanro07 Surnames: Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.counties.franklin/4119/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Would someone happen to have a copy of births and marriages in Swanton from 1846 to 1850.My grgrgr grandparents and their daughter were living in Swanton according to the 1850 census. Their names were written as Freeman(Firmin) Casista 25,b Canada, Emily and their daughter Philoma(Philomene) age 3. Emily's family name is Girard. I'm living in Quebec and the facilities to view microfilms have very outdated equipment with no way to make a copy. I have tried taking pictures with my camera of other microfilms, however they did not come out. For the baptism record on Philomene, it's possible she had a different mother than who is listed in the 1850 census. Some information I have lists her mother as Marie Power and Marie Proulx and family stories say Philomene was half indian. I don't have a birth date for her, just that she was born either in January or June of 1847.Also, her marriage and death records state her place of birth as Brandon,VT. This is where it gets confusing. The family was living in Swanton and why would she be baptised in Brandon....I called different town clerks offices for look ups with no success. Perhaps the microfilms will have the information I'm seeking. I've been searching for this information for quite some time now. Any information or advice would be appreciated. Thank you. Author: emd1174 Surnames: Moore, Hogle, Hunt, Aseltine Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.counties.franklin/4118.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Thank you so much for putting all this effort into looking into this for me! I don't think that the Marion Hunt listed in the 1850 US Census would be the one I'm looking for although Sarah's death record indicates she was born in High Gate. Sarah was a "Moore" so I would think that her mother's name, even if she was widowed would still be Marion Moore? I don't think it was common for woman to revert back to their maiden names after the husbands were gone? Guy (Zay) and Hannah were Henry Hogle's parents, yes. Henry is Sarah's first husband. Yes, I do believe that is Sarah's brother, David, living with her and her family in 1860. I was hoping to search the 1850 US census and find a Moore family with both Sarah and David as children. Y'know, I'm just now looking at that 1850 US census again with William and Rosanah Moore. I'm not sure how you could get Sarah out of Usuroph, but nothing would surprise me when looking at the censuses! But did you also notice that the Marion Hunt was the next door neighbor to the Moore family in Highgate? I never saw that before! When I tried to figure out what happened to Sarah's children after she remarried, I found that her daughter, Louisa was living with a family (the Smiths) as a house servant . Her 1st husband, Henry Hogle died in the Civil War. And yes, Arthur is living with his grandparents, Guy and Hannah Hogle. By this time Sarah was married to Stephen Aseltine, he himself a widower with 2 children of his own. I'm not sure why her children were living with other people, but by 1870, she and Stephen had 2 more children (Ella - my great great grandmother and Aurelia) and his 2 children were already out of the house. 2 more children were born before 1880. I have not yet located the death record for Marion Hunt. I will be traveling to VT later this month hopefully, to see if I can locate the record. I want to try to find the original birth record and/or death record for Sarah Moore. The death record that was sent to the VT state archives shows her mother as Marion Hunt and her father as Stephen Aseltine. Obviously, her father was NOT Stephen Aseltine as that was her husband. I'm going to look more into the William and Rosanah family to see if there is a connection. Thank you for your help! There is also a Henry F. Hogle aged 18 b.Canada living wth his parents (Zay and Hannah Hogle) and siblings in 1850 at Highgate, VT. In 1860 census Henry and Sarah are married and living Swanton, Franklin, Vermont; children: Louisa and Arthur, also listed in the household is a David Moore aged 21 (1839) b.VT. Perhaps this is Sarah's brother or some other relative? In 1860 Marion/Marian Hunt aged 76 (1784) b.MA is living at Sheldon, Franklin, Vermont in the "poor house". As I found David Moore in the 1860 census with Sarah I went back to the 1850 census and found a David Moore aged 11 (1839) b.VT listed at Highgate, VT with William Moore(49) and Rosanah Moore(33) plus Usuroph aged 15 b.VT (female) and another child William aged 13 b.VT....maybe this "Usuroph" is Sarah? In 1870 Louisa Hogle is listed at St Albans, Franklin, Vermont with a Richard and Maryann Smith. Arthur Hogle is listed St Albans, Franklin, Vermont with Guy and Hannah Hogle (grandparents?) In 1870 Sarah and Stephen Aseltine living Swanton, Franklin, Vermont, children Ella 6 and Aurelia 4. Have you found the death record of Marion Hunt? She first married Henry Hogle who died during the Civil War and they had Louisa, Merritt and Arthur. She then married Stephen Aseltine and they had 4 more children - Ella, Aurelia, Lee and Minnie. Abner Dassance settled in Newfield, NY in 1816 when he left Shrewsbury, VT in the year of the great freeze in Vermont. My ancestor, Martin (III), was Abner's brother. If you are interested in joining the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, just email me privately at Ancestry. I'll be happy to let you know my member number so you can hook into the lineage I've proven. Of course, you'd have to get back to Abner (he is named in his father's will and I have a copy if you need it to prove their relationship). There was also a sister named Hannah. The Shrewsbury history discusses another sister named Mary but this is erroneous - Mary was the widow of Martin II's brother, Jesse Dassance, and she owned land in the area. Holland is the son of Martin III. My grandmother was born in Shrewsbury and a photo of the house is in the Shrewsbury book you mention. Her father inherited it from Rebecca Dawson Waterman, also a sibling of Holland and child of Martin III. As for the press gang story - it has been repeated over many years and I haven't been able to ascertain the truth of it. Anyway, if you need any info, just let me know. 1. [VTFRA] McCoy veteran's from Franklin Co.
    2. Jan Walker
    3. I would like to Memorialize George W. McCoy who lived in Franklin County towns of Highgate, Highgate Center, and Thatcher, VT. He lost his life in the Civil War on Nov. 16, 1862 in Sandersville, KY. He was born Sep. 7, 1821 in either Canada, Boston, NY or VT. His children all list a different place of birth. 22nd WI Infantry Organized: Camp Utley, Racine, WI on 9/2/62 Mustered Out: 6/12/65 at Washington, DC George is buried under a beautiful monument in Magnolia East Cemetery, Magnolia, Rock, WI. The above George had a son named George Luther (Lute) McCoy who also served in the military. Lute was born Feb. 14, 1846 in Thatcher, Franklin Co., VT. Lute died 05 Nov 1923, in Evansville, Rock, WI. Lute's story is as follows: At the time of the Civil War, his father, George W. McCoy, volunteered to serve in the 22nd Wisconsin Infantry and died in 1862 in Sandersville, Kentucky. When Lute became 18 years of age, he also volunteered to go into the army. However, when he went for his physical, he passed everything except he was 1/2" too short. They told him if he could stretch that 1/2" in 30 days to come back and they would take him. He was only 5'4 1/2" tall. When he went back, he had padded his heels with cardboard and passed the physical. At the time you could hire a substitute to go into the army in your place if you were drafted. Some fellows offered to pay Lute's mother $800 if he would go in their place. His mother, however, would not accept the offer and said if Lute went into the army it would be in his own place. After he was mustered out of the Army, he received a government pension for an injury received in service. The injury was received in trying to fulfill a bet. The soldiers had a bet on for the one who could stay on this particular mule the longest and Lute was injured when he was bucked off. The foregoing information was told to me by Lute's son, Burchard in 1967 and again in 1975. He also said that Major General Robert Bruce McCoy, for whom Camp (now Fort) McCoy in Sparta, Wisconsin was named was a relative of his. General McCoy was a Spanish American War veteran. I have information on all the children of George W. McCoy, if anyone is interested. It differs from Veteran's Day in that it does *not* focus on those who served and lived, such as (thankfully!) my father, my son, and myself; rather, it commemorates those who marched, or sailed, away, and did not return to tell the tales. Sometimes those tales would have been of heroism, sometimes of terror, more often of boredom, and loneliness. We will never know, except as those who did return may tell us, and only then if we keep the stories alive. So often those whom we should honor on Memorial Day have no other remembrance. So often they died too young to have families of their own, or if they did have children they left their sons and daughters to be raised by others. Too many times only parents, and siblings, and nephews and nieces, will ever recall the sacrifice; because the genealogists of a future time will not find them "in the line". But they stood in the line for us. I encourage anyone who knows of someone who died in service to his country to post a message about that person on this list.
