Author: wandaalter Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.counties.franklin/4134.3.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just a quick note on your post About the Dunhams going to Richford. Remember that during the Revolutionary period (when they were married) British loyalists often went to Canada. Many of the towns north of Richford were settled by Loyalists. It is possible you'll might find some sign of them there. I'll take a look at some sources I have later and see if I come up with anything. Also the US/Canadian border was disputed at one time so parts of Canada were claimed by US. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. That is a lot of what has been driving me crazy and driving my reseaerch. I have had to start from scratch so to speak. I would love to be able to view your family tree. Or I guess I probably should say our relative tree. I am convinced from the censuses that I have reviewed that Joel and Nancy were the parents to Simeon Powers of Cherry River Orford Quebec. The only children I can absoultly confirm are Polly and Almina. Based upon how close Hiriam lived to Simeon I would bet they were brothers. Beyond that I can not confirm or even suggest at this point other children of Joel and Nancy. Wish the Anglicans and Methodist would list parents in marriage ceremonies. That would have been a big help. So we just keepn looking. I did find a baptismal record for Almina in Quebec at the age of 14 but again no parents listed. I am certain it is her though. Every thing adds up. I have a feeling the childr! en got baptised when they were ready as opposed to when they were infants, which means some of them may have been baptize in Vermont. Finding this documentation may be no easy task. We will however keep looking. This is when I wish I still lived in Vt. I will have to write to the archives and see if they have anything. The Wright I am interested in is Ursula Wright b 1760 allegedly in Stillwater or Easton NY and m to Sylvanus Dunham 1778. They allegedly lived in Richford VT where Sylvanus supposedly imported blooded horses. So I am trying to determine where Ursula came from, who her parents were, and how Ursula and Sylvanus met each other. Sylvanus Dunham was b 1754 in Plymouth, served in Rev War, and I have his complete ancestry. It is the Wrights I am battling with. Ursula was m first to a Gilbert and had a son by him. They both died. She then married Sylvanus Dunham in 1778. How and why did they go to Richford VT which was so far out of the way? Did they go there with other Wrights? The parents of Mark Norris Powers was Charles Powers and Lydia (unknown maiden). The census you were reffering to is 1881. I also find it interesting that they are all living side by side including Hirams daughter Eliza Jane and her husband George Pebbles next house down from Hiram. My guess would be that Simeon and Hiram were brothers. It was not uncommon for family members to live near each other. I wonder if the State Depository of Records in Vermont would have any record of birth for Simon and Hiram. I did make a connection between Joel and Nancy Powers and Simon though. After relooking at the 1861 census I found it indicates that Joel and Nancy are living in the same house as Simeon and Anna. To me this would indicate that Joel and Nancy are Simeon's parents. This is last census record for both Joel and Nancy as Joel died in 1862 and Nancy died in 1870. I don't remember if I mentioned this before but I did confirm a daugther of Nancy and Joels as Almina Power! s who married Carlton S. Prouty. Almina and Carlton were listed as daugher and son-in-law on Joel' burial record. Another note of interest is the 1830 census for Franklin, Franklin Vt shows that at that time Joel had 2 sons, one age 5 or younger and one between the ages of 5-10. He also was listed as having 4 daughters. So if we are right that Simeon and Hiram were brothers it would appear that there would also have been an older son. Ahhh! isn't this fun. There was also an Association Test (what they called it where my ancestors signed it in New Hampshire). The Association Test was an attestation they supported the Revolution. Not signing didn't necessarily result in expulsion from the community. There is an excellent book, The Journal of Abner Sanger (no relation), who lived in Keene, NH. He detailed his daily details of farm life which would have mirrored our ancestor's lives. Abner did not sign the Association Test and his brother joined a Loyalist Regiment. Abner was never asked to leave, but was viewed with some suspicion but he never took up arms. His brother moved to Canada after the War. My Healey branch moved to the Potsdam, NY, area and were early founders. This was Jabez and his wife and kids. The Bailey family from Shoreham also went. So, a branch of this family took off for VT in the mid 1700's. Mine lived in Shoreham til at least 1800, then St. Albans, Vt, then by 1809 were in Montreal. Jabez seemed to haved stayed in VT then gone to NY. Joshua IV was a trader along with sons - perhaps the family kept in contact and did business?
