My distant cousin MAY PIERCE ELDRED was town clerk of Shelburne about 30 years ago. When I visited the town office in the early 1960s and inquired about finding records of the Peirce/Pierce Family, she knew immediately that we were relatives. (How often does a genealogist find a cousin as town clerk?!) Thereafter through her grand assistance and memory of family events, I had a productive time searching town and cemetery records and a very cordial evening at May's house with her daughters and brother. She and two daughters and her brother John were the only relatives I think remained who were descendants of LUTHER PIERCE and his wives LUCY WELLS and REBECCA (_______) COOK May Pierce Eldred was b. 8 Oct. 1904. During World War II she was Technical Sergeant 5, in the U. S. Army. She was town clerk and treasurer of Shelburne for many years. She d. 22 Mar 1988 and is buried next to her father in the village cemetery of Shelburne. Her children were Yvonne (called "Lee") who m. Radway Revere Gibbs and Annette (called "Tony") who m. first _____ Maxwell and 2nd Arnold Olson. Does anyone have addresses of these daughters? Lee and her husband visited us in Bar Harbor many years ago. LUTHER PEIRCE (during his life time he changed the spelling to Pierce) but not all his children changed) was born in Suffield CT in 1765 where he married 1st Lucy Wells In Shelburne, by whom he had several children. According to May and her brother John, the children of Luther and Lucy Pierce were born on the Vaughn Place, now owned by the Palmers in Hinesburgh. She died in 1811 and he m. 2nd Rebecca Cook who had had children by her deceased husband David Cook. Luther and Rebecca had a one additional child (Lucy) together. Luther and Rebecca and their former spouses are buried side by side in the East Cemetery in Shelburne.. For many years I have compiled information on the descendants of Luther and his wives and will be glad to share what I have found. I'd like to contact anyone who has an interest in these families. Thank you. Thomas Roderick Bar Harbor, Maine
