Hi, Would appreciate it if you could provide some assistance. My GGGGrandfather, Robert Stinson, was born circa 1755. He lived in Bolton, Chittenden County most of his life. He served as the Bolton Township tax collector during the period 1797-1806. He was married and had 3 sons (William, Andrew, and Allen) plus 2 daughters whose names are unknown. I am trying to determine whether Stimson Mountain might have been named after my GGGGrandfather. The spelling of Stinson was often mistakenly written as Stimson in past years. It is my understanding that mountains were usually named after the person who owned the land at the location. Census records for 1790 and 1900 in Chittenden County show the name of Robert Stinson but no one named "Stimson." Would it be possible to check land ownership records back to 1790 to determine who owned the land where Stimson Mountain is located? Where are the old land records located if they still exist? Thanks in advance for any help that you may be able to provide. Sincerely, Bill Stinson P.S. Robert served in the Revolutionary War from 23 Sep 1777 to 15 Aug 1781. He was later appointed as an Ensign in the Vermont militia on 7 Oct 1797, advancing to Captain on 6 Apr 1804. Robert later sold his land in 1806 as he reached older age and moved to New York.
