Barbara, I, too, am researching Chittenden Co VT. My Cornelius GREGG was born in Milton 1833. A delightful little booklet, "Milton's Story", 1763-1976, states: p. 4: As stipulated by the charter of 1763, lots were set aside for the first minister to settle in Milton, for the spreading of the gospel in foreign lands, for schools and for the Church of England. The legislature before 1805 transferred to schools the lots originally set aside for the Church of England. p. 7: The church at West Milton was built in 1831 at the top of the hill, now known as "Meeting House Hill", near the Paul Morgan home. It was thoroughly repaired and modernized in 1859. The expense was borne by the Methodists and by the Congregationalists and occupied by them on alternate Sundays for some years. As late as 1862 and 1863 peo-ple from Checkerberry attended services at West Milton. The original church had two rows of windows with side galleries and pews with doors that fastened with a button. Services lasted all day with a sermon both morning and afternoon. People brought their lunch or dinner and ate it, weather permitting, in the pine grove behind the church. The church was torn down in 1943 by Harley Perry, a local carpenter, but the bell may still be heard when it rings from the Episcopal Church in Milton Falls. p. 11 mentions a Methodist Church in Milton Boro. p. K has a picture with a familiar surname, Earl BEVINS. :-) Bev ---- BevLJ@Worldnet.att.net http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1329 http://www.angelfire.com/mn/weall/
