I have been doing French Canadian Genealogy for a long time and in dealing with names in the US you have to take into account they didn't know how to spell the french names and often corrupted them into what it sounded like. This is in both people's names and place names. I have a gr gr grandmother who's family name is Riendeau which was corrupted to Yandow, which is the way it sound if you pronounce it like the French. In regards to Moscow, I was told by someone many years ago, that this probably was Mascouche in Quebec province, but you have to go off on soundings like this, and look at the maps of the province and see what places begin with M in this case and sound similar to the word you are looking up.
