    1. OWEN family of Milton, Vermont
    2. The following is from the "Descendants of John Owen of Windsor, CT" by Ralph Owen (1941), pp. 60-62. This is per your request, Linda, on Elijah Owen, father of Phebe Owen-Ashley. "Elijah OWEN (Joshua, Joseph, John), son of Joshua and Margaret (WOODWORTH) Owen, was born at Lebanon, New London County, Conn., 29 Jan. 1721/22. He married (1) at Lebanon, 21 Oct. 1747 PATIENCE WRIGHT, who died 19 March 1756, daughter of Abel and Rebecca WRIGHT of Lebanon, and sister of the Benjamin WRIGHT who married Rachel OWEN, daughter of Joseph OWEN, Elijah's uncle. He married (2) at Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., 10 Nov 1756, OLIVE BEEMAN, daughter of Friend BEEMAN, Jr. She died 17 June 1792. He married (3) ABIGAIL ________, who survived him. The Salisbury land record show him as a party to conveyances and as a resident there in 1757, 1758, 1761, and 1768. In 1771 he removed to Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont. He was living there in 1786, for a land conveyance names him as a resident. History of Poultney, Vermont (published 1875), states that Elijah OWEN settled there in 1771. On 24 Sept. 1772 John GRANT, cousin of Ethan ALLEN, surveyed 100 acres for Elijah OWEN. On 21 May 1773, Ira ALLEN, Survey General, surveyed three pieces of land, containing 150 acres, for Elijah OWEN, adjoining the South line of the town of Poultney. Grand lists of tax assessments for 1781 show that Elijah was living at Poultney, for he paid tax on 35 pounds. He paid tax also in 1782, 1785, 1786, and 1787. In 1786, in a transfer of land, he is described as a resident of Poultney. ('All records in the Town Clerk's Office were destroyed by fire in 1862, including Vol. 1-17 of land records. The tax lists were not in his office and hence were preserved.'--Paul G. Ross, Town Clerk, 3 Dec. 1937.) He followed his brother Leonard to Milton, Chittenden County, Vermont, a new settlement near the mouth of the La Moille River, which empties in to Lake Champlain. Town government was orgainzed 25 March 1788. In April a number of residents signed the oath of fidelity, and Elijah OWEN headed the list as No. 1. On 11 Aug 1788 he bought the land of Nathaniel SMITH. His wife Olive Beeman Owen, died at Milton 19 July 1792. Elijah married a third time (town records). He died intestate in June 1799. His estate came before the Probate Court at Burlington 2 July 1799. (Chittenden County Probate Records, Vol. 1, p. 17.) It was not finally settled until 1810. Then, upon the petition of his son, Heman, the court appointed three commissioners to appraise and divide the property among the widow and four children. The commissioners submitted a chart partitioning the land and the Court approved it. The children who each got a parcel of land probably were: Elisha, b. 5 Oct. 1760; Electa, b. 3 Jan. 1762; Ira, b. about 1774; Heman, born at Poultney about 1779. The 1790 U.S. Census gives the family of Elijah thus: 4 males over 16: probably Mr. Owen, Elijah, Jr., Ambrose and Ira; 2 males under 16: probably Heman and one more; 2 females: probably Mrs. Owen and Electa. The 1800 Census the following: Widow Abigail Owen: 2 males under 10 years; 1 male under 16 years; 1 female under 10 years (possibly her children by a former marriage). Children: i. Sarah, b. 18 July 1748. ii. Naomi, b. 19 Feb. 1750, probably died in infancy. iii. Naomi, b. 3 March 1751; m. in 1770 to Mordecai SOPER, b. in England in 1756 and d. in Vermont in 1829. He served in Vermont militia in the Revolution in 1780 for 13 days in Capt. Zebulon DEWEY's company (Vt. Rev. Rolls.) Child (surname SOPER) 1. Joseph, served as captain in War of 1812; m. Electa MASEFIELD, niece of Capt. Ethan ALLEN; a daughter, Harriet Evaline (1823-1890), m. Sylvester Smith HASKELL. (Compendium of Am. Gen., Vol. 4, pr. 251). iv. Phebe, b. 1 March 1753. v.
