Another very common reason was that most Scot, Irish and English were citizens of the British Commonwealth and therefore when they traveled to Canada they were not required to file immigration papers like they were for this country. VT history shows that the Scots settled mostly in what is called the "Northeast Kingdom", the northeastern part of the state. The were encouraged to come because others were unwilling to settle in the most harsh of VT's areas.
