    1. Burlington 1870 census
    2. Hi: I wonder if anyone else has had a problem trying to find Canadian French familiesin the Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont censuses for 1870 and 1880. I spent the better part of three days going through the censuses line by line and was unable to find any entries for the Lemiere or Courcy families. From other sources I knew that there were several Courcy families in Burlington at the time but was hoping to find information on Children in the families. The family was actually Lemiere dit Courcy. From Church records I knew that My Great-great grandmother Helen (Berube) Courcy had died 14 November 1869. She was listed in a published index of the 1870 mortality schedule, I asked one of the people at the National Archives if the info for mortality schedules was collected at the same time as the regular census schedules were taken. The answer was yes. I then reviewed the mortality schedule on microfilm and noted that although other lofcations had page numbers showing where the information was collected from during the regular schedules, I finally noted at the end of the mortality schedule a statement made by the deputy enumberator to the effect that since there were so many foreigners, he wasn't able to question about people that had died in the past year, so he further stated that he got the mortality information from the city clerks records. Again since there were no page numbers given, I have serious doubts whther he even bothered to take the census of the "foreigners". I'd be interested in your thoughts, it sounds like slipshod work to me Ted Richard
