My question for any Chittenden Family members is, are you familiar with a W.H. Chittenden that resided in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan in 1865? The reason I ask is my Shotwell ancestors lived in Vermont between 1800-1830. They then migrated to London, Ontario, Canada. My G-Grandfather, Archibald Shotwell at the age of nineteen left Canada to enlist as a substitute in The United States Army for W.H.Chittenden. I find it interesting that a nineteen year old boy would venture so far to substitute for a total stranger. The fact that they had Vermont roots makes me think there is a link in some way to the Chittenden's from Vermont and my ancestor. My GG-Grandfather, Benjamin Shotwell was born in Vermont around 1811. I believe he is the son of Abraham Shotwell that resided in Bristol in Addison County in 1810 and 1820. I have deeds of sale with Abraham in 1815 and in the 1820 census records. If anyone has any information related to the Chittenden Family I would be interested in chatting with you. I find this to be a fascinating side story to my history. Thanks for your attention.
