Elijah WHITE....born, August 31, 1800, location unknown (1850 census & 1860 census says MA, but family says VT) He died, April 08, 1877 possibly in Black Brook, AuSable Forks, NY. He married Deborah BABBITT, February 23, 1823, in AuSable Forks, NY. (Some places it says Essex County and some say Clinton.) Deborah's mother was Betty FAY of the Catamount Tavern FAY's, (Battle of Bennington) Elijah and Deborah's children were: William White, b: July 17, 1825 in Vermont James B. White b: September 19, 1827 in Vermont Eliza F. (White) Hotchkiss, b: September 01, 1829 in Vermont Alonzo V. b: June 02, 1831, AuSable Forks, Essex, New York (Only lived 4 days.) Charles P. White, b: June 17, 1832, AuSable Forks, Essex, NY Leander Babbitt White, b: April 09, 1834, AuSable Forks, NY Mary Francis (White) Robinson, b: April 05, 1836, AuSable Forks, NY Hellen M. (White) Hull, b: June 10, 1838, AuSable Forks, NY Warren Alonzo (sometime shows H as middle initial) White, b: January 02, 1840, AuSable Forks, NY, Marion C. (White) Brauh/Braut/Brault b: January 08, 1845 Livonia D. (White) Jackson, b: May 29, 1850 Deborah died, June 21, 1850, supposedly in AuSable Forks, NY and then Elijah married Nancy Spaulding (1860 census) Nancy had 4 daughters, with the last name of Spaulding: Orenda b: 1849, Sophrona b: 1851, Electa b: 1853 and Kate b: 1854. In the 1850 Black Brook, Clinton County census, Elijah was a farmer and his value of real estate was $800. In the 1860 Black Brook, Clinton County census, he was a saddler and the value of his real estate was $1000 and his value of personal estate was $100. Nancy's value of real estate was $500 and her value of personal estate was $500. Alonzo (Warren) was listed as age 20 and a peddlar. Elijah died, April 08, 1877 and on April 12, 1877, Eliza F. Hotchkiss, Leander White, Hellen M. Hull, Hattie M. White, William White, James B. White, Charles P. White, Mary F. Robinson, Warren H. White, Marion C. Brauh/Braut & Livonia D. Jackson sold to Emerson Featherston for $175, Div. Lot #4 in Livingston south side of Highway from Palmer Hill Mine to Clintonville the same land occupied by Elijah White for the last 35 years. (Deed Book 70, page 218.) My feeling is Hattie M. White is Elijah and Nancy's daughter. White, Elijah is in the Black Brook, Clinton Co., NY census, page #066, 1850. He is in the 1860 census with wife, Nancy, 4 Spaulding girls and Alonzo White and Deborah L. White age 10 years. Who were Elijah's parents/siblings. Any and all information appreciated. Thanks marykell
Trying to find proof the Guy Caswell's mother is actually Cynthia Brewster. He is listed in the Mayflower books, but no dates or who he married so not positive this is him. There is the same reference to the him in the Brewster Genealogy. Guy was born May 14, 1804 in Huntington, Chittenden, VT, year possibly may be wrong. According to the info I received there is suppose to be a birth record of him but upon writing to Vermont they said they found nothing. According to Bertha Brown Hanson he was enumerated on the 1830 Census of Huntington as head of household. Mrs Hanson's file folder on the Caswell's contains 5 legal notepad pages of the Caswell vital records she had copied at the VT State Record Office. In these, she penciled in the margin an identification of Guy at the time of his marriage to Almira Ring as being a son of Daniel. Whether this was stated in the VR needs checking. Mrs. Hanson obviously obtained additional material from a published Brewster Genealogy and at points noted errors & corrections. She compiled a family group sheet with Guy as the 7th child of Charles Caswell with a note that the name Charles was Daniel from all other records. She had obviously compiled these group sheets from the Brewster Genealogy & wanted to make certain that it was erroneous to identify Cynthia's husband as Charles Caswell. The confusion possibly was a copying error of the Brewster genealogist, or their informant, who was thinking of the name Charles because Charles Brewster was Cynthia's father. On Mrs. Hanson's group sheet of Daniel & Cynthia Brewster Caswell, the only thing written about Guy is in the marriage column where reference is made to Huntington Vital Records at Montpelier with the date Jan 21, 1830 to Alimera Ring. Any help would be greatly appreciated and will share what I have Thanks LuShelle@ibm.net
My distant cousin MAY PIERCE ELDRED was town clerk of Shelburne about 30 years ago. When I visited the town office in the early 1960s and inquired about finding records of the Peirce/Pierce Family, she knew immediately that we were relatives. (How often does a genealogist find a cousin as town clerk?!) Thereafter through her grand assistance and memory of family events, I had a productive time searching town and cemetery records and a very cordial evening at May's house with her daughters and brother. She and two daughters and her brother John were the only relatives I think remained who were descendants of LUTHER PIERCE and his wives LUCY WELLS and REBECCA (_______) COOK May Pierce Eldred was b. 8 Oct. 1904. During World War II she was Technical Sergeant 5, in the U. S. Army. She was town clerk and treasurer of Shelburne for many years. She d. 22 Mar 1988 and is buried next to her father in the village cemetery of Shelburne. Her children were Yvonne (called "Lee") who m. Radway Revere Gibbs and Annette (called "Tony") who m. first _____ Maxwell and 2nd Arnold Olson. Does anyone have addresses of these daughters? Lee and her husband visited us in Bar Harbor many years ago. LUTHER PEIRCE (during his life time he changed the spelling to Pierce) but not all his children changed) was born in Suffield CT in 1765 where he married 1st Lucy Wells In Shelburne, by whom he had several children. According to May and her brother John, the children of Luther and Lucy Pierce were born on the Vaughn Place, now owned by the Palmers in Hinesburgh. She died in 1811 and he m. 2nd Rebecca Cook who had had children by her deceased husband David Cook. Luther and Rebecca had a one additional child (Lucy) together. Luther and Rebecca and their former spouses are buried side by side in the East Cemetery in Shelburne.. For many years I have compiled information on the descendants of Luther and his wives and will be glad to share what I have found. I'd like to contact anyone who has an interest in these families. Thank you. Thomas Roderick Bar Harbor, Maine
What references are good for checking migratory patterns? Many thanks, Liz Weishaar

The problem in Vermont, and possibly all rural states, is that many of the families (mine included) never went into town to record births, deaths, etc. As far as I know all records have been microfilmed that have been sent to them from the various towns. If the town didn't send them, you may have to resort to the town records--most have original records back to the 1700s. I prefer the unofficial copies xeroxed from the original books than the modern copy from Middlesex. Just my 2cents. All the talk about vital records caught my attention. I have had mixed, but timely, results requesting records from the state of VT and my money was returned on "failed" searches. Further digging on my failures proved I was looking in the wrong place. Records were not always especially well kept in small towns. I have some that were barely complete. And information passed through the family has often proved, for me anyway, to be less than accurate. So if the state says they don't have a record, chances are they don't and you need to do more digging. People seem to have moved around 'back then' just as much as they do today. There seemed to be a lot of moving back and forth over state borders, too, as my Ggrandfather died in Vt but his death cert was completed in NY. Check bordering states for towns on the borders and check migratory patterns for the era. I have also found an amazing number of hints just by getting a local map of the area where my families lived and checking out the names of rural roads and landmarks. Hope this is of some help to some of you out there. Linda
Hi Joyce: > From the response to my questions about ordering vital records in the > 1830's it sounds like what is happening is people send their checks which > are cashed, but don't get any records. Something is wrong re this info. I have been in contact w/the Chittenden Co. Clerk's office in Shelburne, off & on for 15+ years & have *always* rec'd the info that I have requested. The latest info that I rec'd (July 6, 1999) was sent to me within 2-weeks & my check was returned to me, as a non-certified copy was sent (I had forgotten to specify which I wanted). A note told me, if I wanted a certified copy, one would be sent & I would be billed later for cost. The office in Shelburne is *exceptionally* helpful. My needed info has all been ca 1870>>>> possibly earlier date(s) are not held in Co. Clerk's office but am *sure* they will gladly tell you where it can be had. Best of luck. Bev
Hi Barbara In 1997 (and probably today) the Charlotte town clerk was Mary M. Brown, PO Box 119 Charlotte VT 05445 Tel 802-425-3071 Hours M-F 8-4. Hi: From the response to my questions about ordering vital records in the 1830's it sounds like what is happening is people send their checks which are cashed, but don't get any records. What's going on here? Seems to me they shouldn't have to pay and especially if they know the full date. Wouldn't these old records be on microfilm? I wouldn't mind paying a small fee for a search, but surely these offices know what years records they have and what years they don't have. Joyce

I too had the same problem. I sent in my check and got back the answer that they could not find anything. I gave them a lot of information too. Maybe they have lazy employees that just don't want to go that extra mile. SandyWilliams

Hi Kim The National Archives has Soundex microfilm M1299 (117 rolls) "The Index To New England Naturalization Records 1791-1906". Check it out. I am looking for info on the Lessor family of Shelburne. They are related to PARIEZO's, some of them relocated to Swanton. There is said to have been a curse on this family. Thye were all 'crippled' in way or another...the only names my father remembers is Jim, Frances 'Nig', and Theresa, and Bat but he remembers that this was a large family. Thanks, Jackie
Hi everyone. I need someone who lives in Burlington to do me a favor. I need someone to go to the courthouse or where ever they have the birth records and see if they can find other children born to Robert GORDON and Elizabeth HARWOOD. Maybe a marriage lisence for them. The only child I have information on is the youngest, Grace Estelle, born in 1890 in Burlington. Thanks in advance for any help.
