    1. Re: OWEN family of Milton, Vermont/Soper
    2. The Owen Genealogy states: "Elijah OWEN (Joshua, Joseph, John), son of Joshua and Margaret (WOODWORTH) Owen, was born at Lebanon, New London County, Conn., 29 Jan. 1721/22. He married (1) at Lebanon, 21 Oct. 1747 PATIENCE WRIGHT, who died 19 March 1756, daughter of Abel and Rebecca WRIGHT of Lebanon, and... Children: i. Sarah, b. 18 July 1748. ii. Naomi, b. 19 Feb. 1750, probably died in infancy. iii. Naomi, b. 3 March 1751; m. in 1770 to Mordecai SOPER, b. in England in 1756 and d. in Vermont in 1829. He served in Vermont militia in the Revolution in 1780 for 13 days in Capt. Zebulon DEWEY's company (Vt. Rev. Rolls.) Child (surname SOPER) 1. Joseph, served as captain in War of 1812; m. Electa MASEFIELD, niece of Capt. Ethan ALLEN; a daughter, Harriet Evaline (1823-1890), m. Sylvester Smith HASKELL. (Compendium of Am. Gen., Vol. 4, pr. 251). Hello, I am a descendant of Elijah Owen & Patience Wright, via their dau. Naomi who married Mordecai Soper. First, researchers have found Patience Wright may have been a grandchild of Abel & Rebecca Wright, not a child, because they would have been too old! Also, Elijah's son-in-law, Mordecai Soper, most likely was not born in Wales, in fact no birth place has yet been found. The earliest record of him is his marriage record where it says he was of the "Nine Partners". Mordecai had many children. In Milton are local place names such as Soper Falls and Sopertown. 1. OWEN family of Milton, Vermont
    2. The following is from the "Descendants of John Owen of Windsor, CT" by Ralph Owen (1941), pp. 60-62. This is per your request, Linda, on Elijah Owen, father of Phebe Owen-Ashley. "Elijah OWEN (Joshua, Joseph, John), son of Joshua and Margaret (WOODWORTH) Owen, was born at Lebanon, New London County, Conn., 29 Jan. 1721/22. He married (1) at Lebanon, 21 Oct. 1747 PATIENCE WRIGHT, who died 19 March 1756, daughter of Abel and Rebecca WRIGHT of Lebanon, and sister of the Benjamin WRIGHT who married Rachel OWEN, daughter of Joseph OWEN, Elijah's uncle. He married (2) at Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., 10 Nov 1756, OLIVE BEEMAN, daughter of Friend BEEMAN, Jr. She died 17 June 1792. He married (3) ABIGAIL ________, who survived him. The Salisbury land record show him as a party to conveyances and as a resident there in 1757, 1758, 1761, and 1768. In 1771 he removed to Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont. He was living there in 1786, for a land conveyance names him as a resident. History of Poultney, Vermont (published 1875), states that Elijah OWEN settled there in 1771. On 24 Sept. 1772 John GRANT, cousin of Ethan ALLEN, surveyed 100 acres for Elijah OWEN. On 21 May 1773, Ira ALLEN, Survey General, surveyed three pieces of land, containing 150 acres, for Elijah OWEN, adjoining the South line of the town of Poultney. Grand lists of tax assessments for 1781 show that Elijah was living at Poultney, for he paid tax on 35 pounds. He paid tax also in 1782, 1785, 1786, and 1787. In 1786, in a transfer of land, he is described as a resident of Poultney. ('All records in the Town Clerk's Office were destroyed by fire in 1862, including Vol. 1-17 of land records. The tax lists were not in his office and hence were preserved.'--Paul G. Ross, Town Clerk, 3 Dec. 1937.) He followed his brother Leonard to Milton, Chittenden County, Vermont, a new settlement near the mouth of the La Moille River, which empties in to Lake Champlain. Town government was orgainzed 25 March 1788. In April a number of residents signed the oath of fidelity, and Elijah OWEN headed the list as No. 1. On 11 Aug 1788 he bought the land of Nathaniel SMITH. His wife Olive Beeman Owen, died at Milton 19 July 1792. Elijah married a third time (town records). He died intestate in June 1799. His estate came before the Probate Court at Burlington 2 July 1799. (Chittenden County Probate Records, Vol. 1, p. 17.) It was not finally settled until 1810. Then, upon the petition of his son, Heman, the court appointed three commissioners to appraise and divide the property among the widow and four children. The commissioners submitted a chart partitioning the land and the Court approved it. The children who each got a parcel of land probably were: Elisha, b. 5 Oct. 1760; Electa, b. 3 Jan. 1762; Ira, b. about 1774; Heman, born at Poultney about 1779. The 1790 U.S. Census gives the family of Elijah thus: 4 males over 16: probably Mr. Owen, Elijah, Jr., Ambrose and Ira; 2 males under 16: probably Heman and one more; 2 females: probably Mrs. Owen and Electa. The 1800 Census the following: Widow Abigail Owen: 2 males under 10 years; 1 male under 16 years; 1 female under 10 years (possibly her children by a former marriage). Gen., Vol. 4, pr. 251). iv. Phebe, b. 1 March 1753. v. Hulda (twin), d. yg. vi. Elijah (twin), b. 28 Jan. 1755; prob. d in infancy. vii. Patience, d. in infancy. viii. Patience, b. 23 Feb. 1758. ix. Elijah, Jr., b. 1759. x. Elisha (mistakenly called Elijah, Jr. in U.S. Census of 1790), b. 1760. xi. Electa, b. 3 Jan. 1763. xii. Esther, b. 22 Aug. 1766. xiii. Ann, b. 27 Aug. 1765. xiv. Lois, b. 28 Feb. 1767; m. Hiram SANDERSON. xv. Julius Augustus, b. 23 April 1769. xvi. Ambrose, b. 25 Dec. 1770 at Salisbury (Barbour's Index .... ); d. 20 Nov. 1792 (Milton Vermont Town Records) xvii. Ira, b. 1774 at Poultney, Vt. xviii. Heman, b. about 1779 at Poultney, Vt." Further information is available in this Owen genealogy on Sarah, Phebe, Elijah Jr, Elisha, Ann, Julius, and Ira, most of whom settled and were married in Milton. Further installments will provide more details. Family names married into OWEN in this next generation are LOGGIN, CASTLE, MURRAY, ALLEN, ASHLEY, and CASWELL.

    1. OWEN family of Milton, VT
    2. This is the first of several installments on members of the OWEN family who were early settlers in Milton, Vermont. This excerpt is from "Descendants of John Owen of Windsor, Connecticut" by Ralph D. Owen (1941), pp. 58-60. "Leonard OWEN (Joshua, Joseph, John), son of Joshua and Margaret (WOODWORTH) OWEN, was born 13 Dec 1720 at Lebanon, Conn. and died before 1790; buried at Milton, Vt. He married (1) Experience, who died 1 May 1756, in her 24th year; (2) at Salisbury, 28 April 1757, Mary STANNARD. He moved to Salisbury about 1750. On 12 Sept. 1750 Yale College leased to Leonard Owen of Salisbury a tract of 728 acres for a long term of years. ... The Salisbury land records also show Leonard OWEN of Salisbury as a party to conveyances in 1762, 1773, 1775, and 1781. So as early as 1775 he bought land in Milton Township, Chittenden County, Vt. 'Know all men by these presents that I, Richard DOWNING of Newington, in Rockingham County, and province of New Hampshire, esquire, for and in consideration of the sum of 20 L lawful money of said province, to me in hand paid, before the delivery hereof, by Leonard OWEN of Salisbury, in Litchfield County, and colony of Conn., yeoman, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have given, granted, bargained, sold, and released, and by these presents do give, grant, bargain, sell, release, convey, and confirm to him the said Leonard OWEN and to his heirs, one full share or lot of land in the township of Milton, which was given under the Great Seal of the Province of New Hampshire to the said Richard DOWNING of the charter patent, which land is now supposed to be in the province of New York, 9 Feb 1775.' The original grantees of Milton were 65 in number. Each received a lot of about 100 acres in 1763. But none of them moved onto his land. The town was first settled by William IRISH, Leonard OWEN, Amos MANSFIELD, Absolam TAYLOR, and Thomas DEWEY in February 1782. (Heminway: "Vermont Historical Gazeteer", Vol. I, p. 663). 'Milton was settled by William IRELAND and Leonard OWEN. In 1782 Leonard OWEN settled on land several miles south of the site of Checkerbury (part of the township) on the place occupied (in 1885) by Eli NELSON. Leonard OWEN is buried in the cemetery at Milton.' (from "History of Chittenden County, Vt., 1886). The town was organized 25 March 1788. The first town clerk was Enoch ASHLEY. The first church was the Congregational, organized in 1804. No OWEN among its members. Several land transfers are recorded in which Leonard OWEN sold land. Leonard OWEN left no will. The date of his death can only be inferred from the latest deed he gave. Since his name is not listed in the U.S. Census of 1790 he probably died before that year. (There are some fifty gravestones in the Milton cemetery on which the inscriptions are illegible). Children, by first wife, born at Salisbury: i. Eunice, b. 30 Nov. 1754 ii. Leonard, b. 20 April 1756 Children by second wife, born at Salisbury: iii. Sabre, b. 26 Dec. 1757 iv. Mary, b. 20 1759. v. Sibel, b. 1 Sept. 1761 vi. Thadeus, b. 27 Jan. 1763 vii. Lusina, b. 18 Oct. 1764 viii. Abigail, b. 18 July or May 26 1766; m. Elisha OWEN, her 1st cousin. ix. Daniel, b. 14 Feb 1768 x. Abel, b. 26 Feb. 1772" Leonard OWEN, Jr. and his brother, Thaddeus, were early settlers of Wilmington, N. Y. about 1800. Abel OWEN remained in Milton. I will provide information on him in my next installment. Hope this is helpful to someone out there. David Owen Cartwright

    3. >From Hemenway's Vermont Historical Gazetteer Bolton, Vermont pg. 482 The first actual settlements were made immediately after the war of the Revolution. The precise time does not appear upon the town records; yet as near as can be ascertained from the oldest inhabitants, it is evident that some of the first settlers came from the Connecticut river valley as soon as the war closed. That there were no settlements in this vicinity at the time when Capt. John Barnet was killed, is clear, for when he passed down the river there was nothing but an Indian trail through the woods. In this trail he went as far as Richmond where he was shot by a party of Tories, the account of which may be found in the history of that town. It was , therefore, soon after the Revolution, that John and Robert Kennedy, Peter Dilse, a noted trapper, Amos Palmer, Noah Dewey, Augustus Levaque, JABEZ JONES, Daniel Pineo, James Craig, John Preston, Johmn Moore, Robert Stinson and Samuel Barnet settled in Bolton. 2. Hi List: This is just a request to all who are doing research in Chittenden Co. If you see the surname Bonner or Boner, please let me know. I am looking for a John and Mary Bonner/Boner around the 1830's to 40's with a son Alfred Austin. My great grandfather, Alfred was born either in 1841, 43 or 44. Several different dates on several different sources. I do not find anything on Alfred until 1900 in Michigan where he died in 1916. Also, a Napoleon Bonner who is related to my great grandfather, but I don't know how. His military file indicates he was born in Hinesburg, Milton or Burlington. Again, several different stories. I have looked in all of these towns census records with no luck. Thanks for the lookout. Sandy Williams

Dan and I enjoyed a wonderful long weekend for our anniversary visiting the churches and area that our Patrick and Bridget Kehoe attended in the 1850's. Since the Vermont visit I have returned to Co. Carlow Ireland and found the church that they were married in and baptisted two daughters in. We found distant cousins and it was truely an internet success story, thanks to the kind souls on this list and others. Good luck to you all with the continued search.
