3. It might be a good idea if all of us on the Chittenden Co. list would "check in" with just the surnames they are researching, the time frame i.e. 1750-1800, the towns, of known etc. and in what state you presently reside. Perhaps we could effectively share information and perhaps even do some looks-ups in our home state, if appropriate, on a voluntary basis naturally. I am presently a subscriber on a CT list and we have LOTS of shared information and contributions by all. My main lines of research are: REDFIELD late 1700's early 1800's Hinesburg; REYNOLDS, 1800-1880, Williston; ROBBINS 1786-1850 Richmond; Also BARNEY, BUSHNELL, THURSTON spouses of REYNOLDS. Perhaps someone else on the list will be researching my names or yours. I live in Wisconsin and have access to the State Historical Library here. Nancy Vogt

3. Nancy Vermont law did not require that town clerks keep vital records until 1856. Some town clerks voluntarily kept vital records before that date, however such records were not uniformly kept or available today. 2. Hello. I live in Vermont and have found the staff of the General Services Ctr. in Middlesex very helpful during my many visits to them while doing my genealogical research. They receive many telephone & written requests daily. To respond to your inquiry re: on line resources. You might want to check out the Vermont Historical Society web site. It has addresses/contact person and in some cases email links to all Vermont towns. Their web site is http://www.state.vt.us/vhs/ Another suggestion is to check out the link for the Vermont Secretary of State' page found on the State of Vermont Home Page. The link called "GUIDE TO VERMONT'S TOWN CLERKS, TREASURERS AND COUNTY CLERKS, 1999" The address is : http://www.sec.state.vt.us/pubs/ClerksandTreasurersDirectory/index.htm Hope this helps. Good luck. Lynn

3. I, too thank all who volunteered advice. I live in Wisconsin which did not become a state until 1848, and therefore records are somewhat difficult to find early on. I believe that I was working under the assumption that the states on the east coast all had records going back much earlier and in fact some do have records back to the 1600's. I have had more difficulty with NH, NY and VT. I understand that fire was often the cause of lost data. I suppose now the poor town clerks in Chittenden Co. will be flooded with requests! Nancy Vogt

1. Vermont Vital Records
2. Valerie George
3. Dear Vermont researchers, I am a native Vermonter (7 generations in Huntington and Hinesburg!) presently living in Chicago. I have done a great deal of genealogy research in Vermont and want to tell you all a little bit about their system. Vital records and deeds in Vermont are mostly kept by the TOWN, not the COUNTY, as most other non-New England states do. Most towns began keeping some vital records as soon as the town was organized, but this was strictly voluntary, people were not REQUIRED to register their births, marriages and deaths until much later (about the turn of the century). You are much more apt to find a marriage record than a birth, and very few deaths were recorded. You can get any vital record from the town, but the response time and price charged vary greatly (call first). Most towns do not have an index for their vital records and you will get a much better response if you know the date as closely as possible. About 1918 the town clerks of every town in Vermont were required to transcribe all of their Vital Records onto cards and send them to the state, where they were assembled into a grand alphabetical index. These cards contain in most cases all of the information in the original record, including birthplaces and parent's names etc. If it is not on the card, it is not in the original record (in nearly every case). It is these cards (now on microfilm to protect the originals) which are consulted when you send a request to Montpelier. The state Vital records facility is now located in Middlesex (about 5 miles away), but any request to Montpelier is forwarded there automatically. You can go to Middlesex and consult the cards yourself and when you do you will be working in the same room as the 3 vital records clerks and can observe them. I have done so many times and can tell you 1)they try to answer most requests the same day they come in. 2)they check the cards as carefully as they can, trying different spellings, etc. 3)if they report back that they cannot find the record, it means they have probably spent a long time looking. If you get a response of "no record" does that mean it does not exist? Not necessarily. Some towns made a real effort to get all their old records onto the cards and even went out to the old cemeteries and transcribed from the old stones. Other towns weren't so careful and some of their records did not get transcribed. Also, the cards are hand-written copies of hand-written old books and so may be so badly mis-spelled that the clerks cannot find your person in a reasonable time. What to do? Do your own looking, and you don't have to go to Vermont to do it, either. Fortunately, the Mormons have filmed ALL of the vital records and early town records of EVERY Vermont town, and they have also filmed the index cards that the Montpelier clerks are using. You can go into any LDS Family History Center and have a film of that town's records or that part of the grand index sent to you for about $3.50, then look for yourself and make any copies you like. That's the only way to be sure. Check every page of the early town records as you will often find marriages just stuck in among the town meeting minutes and tavern licenses and stock ear marks, etc., just as the town clerk added them in. You can look up what the Mormons have available for your town on their website: www.familysearch.org Click on "Custom Search" and then search the Family History Library Catalog. Or pay a visit to Vermont. It's beautiful. Valerie George

3. Hi Nancy, I don't know where you live, but we're here in Arizona, born and raised in Burington,Vt. many moons ago.(haha) I have never sent for anything through the mail to Montpelier as far as records go. Our daughter and I went back in '92 and we went to Montpelier, but found nothing, and were advised to go to Middlesex, just outside of Montpelier, where we got copies (certified) and at that time they were $5.oo each. Now, I believe they are $7.oo-$10.oo. We had much better luck going to the City Hall in Burlington to the town clerks' office and were allowed to go in the back room where all the big ledgers were and had a 'ball' finding certificates and we copied them at 'NO' charge--it was so 'fun' and 'exciting' to see the Census of the Living and also, those who had died in our family and the dates, cause of, etc. I think you'd have much better luck at town clerks' offices and/ or city halls and/or Libraries, Federal offices, etc. My hubby and I went home to Vt. last year and did a few more certificates and also in '95 and they were charging $1.00 per copy, so maybe it got too hectic in that 'wee' room and all these genealogists running wild.(haha). Just wanted to 'share' our experiences and hope they 'helped' you in some "small way". Do you have any kin and/or friends who could do lookups for you in Vt. ? I don't, as my relatives are too old and our friends aren't interested in this genealogy thingy, you know ? So, we'll be going back home next year or possibly in the Fall again, and look for some more certificates. Best of Luck & Happy Hunting...! Joan P.S.--Nancy I did retrieve some Baptism and Burial certificates from one of the Catholic Churchs in Burlington, and the Episcopal church, also.... but when we went to the cemeteries where they said they buried my ggg-grandparents, they were nowhere to be found, and then we even went to 'all' the cemeteries in town, but to no avail--so next time, we will go to the diosese of both churchs, and find out what's going on and find out where my grandparents, from Ireland are ? Hopefully. Someone told me that sometime they are buried with other close relatives, underneath or on top of-- but have no gravestone, because of 'poorness' to even afford the burial in those days---I don't know...! Didn't mean this to be so long--hope you don't mind, but wanted to save you more money--'sending' and hope I helped somehow...they sure can send you on wild goose chases, sometimes...!! Sincerely, Joan Write when you can, if you want to.

3. I had the same experience. I sent in $21.00 for three records. They came back (in a very short period of time) all marked "No record found". There are three possible explanations that I can think of offhand. 1. The clerk in the office did not even bother to look. Just marked the record "not found" and kept the money for the State of VT. 2. The marriage took place at home and was not recorded officially. 3. The birth took place at home and was also not recorded officially. I would like to locate a number of records in VT but I fear that I will have the same result--"no record found" but we are keeping your money. It would be helpful if there was some way to find a list of churches for various time periods in the towns of VT and perhaps a record exists of marriages and baptisms by the minister. Another thought would be to contact the town clerk or local historian. I don't know if this information is available on line. Anyone?? Nancy Vogt
