It's good to see more activity on this list. I was interested to read queries and answers from several people on the last posting, and I used the URL given to look up what might be available for Winooski which is the area I'm interested in and the surname FINNEGAN (not a lot unfortunately). I belong to Lancsgen in England and that is a very lively list with people responding to queries if they have anything useful to add, or offering to do lookups if they have access to local libraries etc. I'll take the opportunity to repost the family I'm interested in just in case someone might know anything:- Hugh FINNEGAN m Sarah CUGLEY 1886 at The Catholic Church, (St Stephen's?), Winooski. Sarah was born in Liverpool in 1862 and was sister to my gt grandmother. They had children Maggie b 1887, George b 1888, Thomas b 1890, Hugh b 1892, Arthur b 1894, Sarah b 1896 and Millicent b 1899. They were living at 15 Forest Street Winooski. If anyone has queries about Lancashire (England) I would try to help. Pat Smith (now living in North Yorkshire)
I have used the Winooski records and the are great, they have index books for all their info. It is the best place I have been to do research. Their records also include the Old town of Colchester records from 1857 to 1922. Plus if you write or call there for info the main person looking it up belongs to the local genealogical society. There is a section pertaining to obtaining vital records. You can print out Birth, Marriage, Death request form. Follow instructions about sending your money etc. The address is St. of Vt. Public Records, Drawer 33, Montpelier, VT 05633 They don't seem to have many records before 1865 (I haven't had an luck at any rate) but hopefully they would have the ones you are looking for. I have also written to the Town Clerks of all the towns I am interested in. I have received two responses; one said a fire destroyed all the records before 1850+. I did receive a nice letter from one Town Clerk in Shelburne. So far no responses to the several others to whom I wrote over a month ago. Many of the FC family names were grossly misspelled and/or anglicized. Some were even badly misspelled anglicized names. They only way I was able to find some of my PARADIS, POIRIER, and MASSE family members was to read the whole census, line by line. For example, one of my POIRIERs was spelled PRAYER, another PERIA, and still others PORRIER. I was able to determine that the PRAYER listed was my POIRIER based on the first names and ages. I'm heading to Vermont from Wisconsin in two weeks. Muffy are you still monitoring this list? I have her to thank for a gold mine of genealogical success last year. All possible thru connections found on the internet!! Good luck hunting. Pam Kehoe Wisconsin
Muffy, Muffy, do you read me? Come in, Muffy.
I failed to attach the note from Ted Richard (skppr641) who was the one asking about his French Canadian family not being present in the 1870 census even though he searched line by line and thought they should have been there. I then replied asking about the soundex. I actually have had success on occasion on the microfilm census records when looking line by line at a smaller town <g> Sorry about the confusion and thanks to all who wrote. Nancy
I may be wrong about this but--is there a "Soundex" for the 1870 census or an Index available for the State? It is certainly time consuming looking through the census line by line. I have done this also, as my state doesn't have all the indexes available for all years. It is also possible that they were in a rural area just outside Burlington. Perhaps they spoke French and they were unable to communicate? Nancy Vogt

Hi: I wonder if anyone else has had a problem trying to find Canadian French familiesin the Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont censuses for 1870 and 1880. I spent the better part of three days going through the censuses line by line and was unable to find any entries for the Lemiere or Courcy families. From other sources I knew that there were several Courcy families in Burlington at the time but was hoping to find information on Children in the families. The family was actually Lemiere dit Courcy. From Church records I knew that My Great-great grandmother Helen (Berube) Courcy had died 14 November 1869. She was listed in a published index of the 1870 mortality schedule, I asked one of the people at the National Archives if the info for mortality schedules was collected at the same time as the regular census schedules were taken. The answer was yes. I then reviewed the mortality schedule on microfilm and noted that although other lofcations had page numbers showing where the information was collected from during the regular schedules, I finally noted at the end of the mortality schedule a statement made by the deputy enumberator to the effect that since there were so many foreigners, he wasn't able to question about people that had died in the past year, so he further stated that he got the mortality information from the city clerks records. Again since there were no page numbers given, I have serious doubts whther he even bothered to take the census of the "foreigners". I'd be interested in your thoughts, it sounds like slipshod work to me Ted Richard
