Hi Everyone, Some time ago, I was searching for information about old Bolton cemeteries. Since then, Frances Bianchi of Bianchi Stone Cutters, Essex Junction, VT was kind enough to send the following which I will pass along in case others are interested. West Bolton: 1818-1976, 325 graves, still used to some extent. Located at 4 Corners of West Bolton -- go north to end of dead end road. East Bolton: 1811-1967, 200 graves, no longer used. Located at south side of U.S. Route 2 a short distance north of I-89 underpass. Frances extracted this information from documents of the Vermont Old Cemetery Association (VOCA), c/o Arthur Hyde, RR 1, Box 10, Bradford, VT 05033. They have a listing of burials at West Bolton Cemetery which was prepared by Elizabeth Beckwith, Underhill, VT in August 1990. Thanks so much to Frances Bianchi for taking the time to provide this helpful information. Bill Stinson Descendant of GGGGramdfather Robert Stinson
To anyone living near Bolton: Is the cone-shaped hill which is easily seen behind Ray's Body Shop and garage on Route 2 Stimson Mountain? If it has no beacon and power lines leading up to it, then it is not. We would just like to know. If we could jump from Rome, Maine three hours west on Route 2 to Bolton, Vt., the answer would be right before our eyes! Tom and Kathleen Martin
I have been doing French Canadian Genealogy for a long time and in dealing with names in the US you have to take into account they didn't know how to spell the french names and often corrupted them into what it sounded like. This is in both people's names and place names. I have a gr gr grandmother who's family name is Riendeau which was corrupted to Yandow, which is the way it sound if you pronounce it like the French. In regards to Moscow, I was told by someone many years ago, that this probably was Mascouche in Quebec province, but you have to go off on soundings like this, and look at the maps of the province and see what places begin with M in this case and sound similar to the word you are looking up. Regards, Phil

Just wanted to say a big thank you to all who responded to my question on St. Leger & Moscow. I certainly appreciate all who helped and I appreciate this list as everyone seems quite willing to help. Thanks again and Happy Hunting, Pam Harbison
Whoa is me ^.^. But maybe closer to my g grandfather Ezra Chase. The books for the year he was to have died (1901), town of Essex Jct. are out for repair. UVM library, Special Collections has a booklet listing the "The Village Cemetery", Essex Jct. VT. Found this data: Herbert W Chase 1864-1918, Matilda A his wife, 1862 George J Chase (he is number 1548 in the Seven Generations of Thomas and Aquilla Chase) matches with wife listed on gravestone Sarah his wife 1817-1889. The "Seven Generations....." states they lived in Essex Jct. VT, 1872. However as of yet found no other matching information which is on the gravestones::: Maltilda Chase 1862-1960; Baby; Ruth H; Mother, Herbert J Chase 1864-1918; John J Chase 8th Reg VT Vol Inft, 1843-1909; Ezra (******could it be my g grandpa?); no data given ^.^ Mary; Betsy; Claude G 1872-1954; Polina S 1847-1933; Charlie H (Baby) The Chase goes on! Yes! They are people too! and at the risk of type casting seems Chases were rather prolific;0) Interesting (to me) anyway, Bishop Philander though the youngest of 15 ^.^ and referred to as "Little Philander", he was looked up to by older siblings and an example leading many "back" to "mother church". There is an accounting written by one of the Bethel (VT) descendants, telling that there was word of the Bishop coming to (Old) Christ Church--- Bethel--Gilead, so someone went around like "Paul Revere" letting everyone know he was on the way! His brother, Honorable Dudley and I share a bit in common; he in I both lie in the archives of the Diocese as being members of Grace Episcopal, Randolph Center. He is buried in cemetery in Rand. CTR, where my father and 2 brothers are. Little tid bits Harriet Chase
Hi, all, How interesting it is to think of Philander Chase as having grandchildren. (Yes, I know most people did!) So often we place a famous historical figure where he fits--in this case founder of Kenyon College and first Bishop of Ohio--and we forget he also was important in the context of family. Mary S
Dear Jerry your note almost gives my heart flip flops, as there was a Laura Chase Smith who lived with and wrote about her grandfather Bishop (Episcopal) Philander Chase of Ohio. Philander's siblings in adult life lived in Bethel, Royalton, Randolph, Burlington Vermont. However, her parents do not seem to match. I have found out that we (as in my immediate Chase) had relatives in Burlington & Essex Jct. VT---- so who knows what I will find! Also when I settle down a bit will look at the " Seven Generations of Aquila and Thomas Chase" the bible of that line of Chase, looking especially in the Burlington area. If I find anything "relative" will post. Harriet Chase
Hi Harriet and list readers-- Have you run across these folks: Laura CHASE (1806-1879) married Seldon SMITH ( 1796-1879) in Chittenden Co. Both died in OH. Laura's parents were Josiah (1781-1868) and Amy (MOREHOUSE) CHASE (? - 1866) of Colchester (died in OH) The CHASE folks tie back to Aquila of Newburyport, MA but I've had no luck at all with the SMITHs. Jerry Smith in Sacramento, CA
Hi, I am wondering if anyone on this list might be of some assistance. I have found some birth records in Winooski, VT. that pertain to my line and I am trying to determine exactly where my ancestors originated. One of the certificates lists the place of birth for the father as "Moscow" and for the mother "St. Leger". Does anyone know of anywhere in Canada by these names, as I have been unable to locate anything similar? The only places that come up when entered into the FHL catalog are in France & Russia. I am not familiar with Canada and thought perhaps someone on the list might be more familiar with place names etc. Thanks for any suggestions or help in advance. Pam Harbison

Actually there are several St. Leger references, using the same method as the previous posting. Go haunting! Harriet Chase
http://www.virtualcities.com/~virtual/ons/vt/y/vty1601.htm Hi, I am new to THIS list. However, if you are on any other VT list, surely you have heard from me, so some of this may be a repetition. I used my favorite search engine: dogpile.com, entered Moscow, Vermont. According to the above web site, part of Stowe is called Moscow. Maybe your lead. Did not find anything on St. Ledger yet ^.^ Hope this helps in some way. Harriet Chase, born, raised in Randolph Center, Vermont Now a WASH! g Grandfather Ezra Bowers Chase "may" be buried in Essex Jct. VT
Hello list: While searching in VT last month, I found the following death record: Charles Devoid b. 1806 Quebec died 1905 Jericho. Would like to know more about this person. Thank you in advance. Molly Shumate molly@sunline.net
I don't claim to be any kind of an expert on cemeteries or burial information but I will make the following observations. l. 1811 is 189 years ago when there may not have been a church building with a cemetery attached which was certainly the case in later years. 2. Unless the town set aside land, or it was donated from some weathy landowner there was probably no cemetery per se. 3. Burial permits were not required back then as they are now. 4. I am sure that many were buried on their own land and inexpensive markers (or no markers were erected). These would have been lost over the span of years. 5. Not everyone was in a financial position to erect an expensive stone, or marble or whatever marker which would last for upwards of 200 years. 6. I am sure you can walk the cemeteries. I would suspect that each town has a list of areas where there are graves, even if they are not "cemeteries" and directions as to location. 7. Stones disintegrate, population expands, land is needed, houses are built, etc. etc.
Hi Everyone, Someone in the forum previously mentioned old cemeteries at Bolton as follows: It is my understanding that Bolton has two old cemeteries. One is called West Bolton; first burial 1818 and the last 1896 with 325 graves. Several stones down, broken, leaning. The second is East Bolton, first burial 1811 and the last in1967. Not used -- 200 graves in good condition. I wonder if it would be possible for a visitor to walk around and read inscriptions on the grave markers? Also, wonder if someone has compiled a list of the interments? Finally, where were people buried prior to 1811? Thanks for any help. California Bill
