    1. short history
    2. Hi List, Some information from Hemenway's VERMONT HISTORICAL GAZETTEER, Vol I: Chittenden County was not permanently settled until after the Rev War in 1783. A few families had been there before the War but all left in the summer of 1776 after the retreat of the American Army from Canada. Stephen Lawrence was the first to return to Burlington in July 1783. Several families arrived in August 1783. The first recorded Town Meeting held in Burlington was on 19 Mar 1787. The first marriage recorded in Burlington was for Samuel Hitchcock and Lucy Allen on 26 May 1789. And the first birth recorded was Loraine Allen Hitchcock on 5 June 1790. Early families included: Stephen Lawrence, John Doxey, Frederick Saxton, John Collins, Samuel Lane, John Knickerbocker, Job Boyton, Gideon King, Stephen Keys, Jonathan Hart, Zachariah Hart, Philip Walker, Isaac French, Jeremiah French, John Downer, Timothy Titus, Isaac Webb, John Van Sicklin. The names of the early surveyors of the town are: Thomas Butterfield, William Coit, Caleb Henderson, Ira Allen, Nahum Baker, Nathaniel Allen, Able Waters and Edward Allen. Early Vital Records for Chittenden Co. are very sparse. It was not required to report death records and in 1920 Vermont ordered each town to record all gravestones. Some of the gravestones were unreadable by this time and some had disappeared completely. Family Bibles, Land Deeds, Probate Records, printed Town & County Histories, and Census Records are sometimes the only way to find information about early Chittenden County families. Bette

    3. Jeffrey, Thank you so much for posting these names and page numbers. I might have actually come across some leads on my Powell and Gray lines. That is no small miracle. Can you please give a complete citation for the work so I can try to get copies of the pertinent pages through ILL? Thanks again for sharing your work. Bob Brown Stillwater, OK

    3. In response to David Forsman's query re Samuel Wills: Doesn't 1771 seen awfully early for a birth to be recorded for Burlington, Vt.? Maybe not, and perhaps someone will clear this up for me. Could it have been from a family Bible record? (The births we have researched in Bradford, Vt., old Mooretown, weren't recorded quite that early.) Kathleen

    3. Dear List, I wrote asking for help for a friend of mine with a reverse surname, Dusharoon/Disharoon and received about 5 replies. As most of you wrote to me personally your answers, The question and the Thank you was sent to the list. The replies did not reach the list and as I result I had a list member write telling me the error of my ways in showing "Bad Etiquette." As I no way intended to cause a problem nor did I intentionally leave anyone out I would appreciate in the future "If" I ask for help, that all replies be sent through the list. In case anyone else might be interested, I received about 5 responses and each one said they thought the name Disharoon/Dusharoon was probably a dit name derived from De Charron. If I offended anyone, I apologise. But, like me, if those that became offended and were interested had asked, I am sure they also would have received the help as I did. Once again, Thank you to those who responded. Pam Harbison

    3. I used a database program to sort these. I hope that it is understandable. I'm not sure how this will word wrap or appear on your display, but I hope it works out. I thought that what was posted from Hemenway's Vermont Gazetteer in September was very good. I only have what I am posting today on Charlotte and Hinesburgh. 2. David Forsman
    3. Looking for any information about SAMUEL WELLS, who is said to have been living in the Burlington, Vt. area before removing to Bradford County, PA., in 1796-97. Born 8/1/1771, Burlington, Vt., (?) Died 3/20/1827, Orwell, Bradford County, Pa.Married the Sister of ASHAEL JOHNSON, JEMIMA JOHNSON, in Orwell. Johnsons are said to be from Burlington, Conn. The two different Burlingtons are confusing, because local histories of Bradford County list the two men as arriving together (?). Anyone with any information about WELLS In the Burlington Vt., area, or JOHNSONS, or a direction you might suggest that I take would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any and all of your replies, Kim Farwell Forsman

He has been unable to find his line because they were from France, but he has no idea what the French spelling or pronunciation of this name would be. I would appreciate any help from anyone who might be able to give me an idea where he might find the translation, or from anyone who might know. I thought I would ask this list simply because you all have been so quick and helpful anytime anyone asks, and I know if I am to have help, this is the place to go. I send my thanks in advance and Happy Hunting. The surname is: Dusharoon/Disharoon, sometimes an "e" is added on the end. Thanks again, Pam Harbison

    3. Anne et all I did not make myself clear; I am aware that Norwich U is in Nothfiled, Vermont, NOW. My question/ponderings is: is there any connection of the Goddards of Norwich, Vermont and Goddard College. There was a whole bunch of them in the early days. If there is a connection; just ironic that Goddard College, now part of Norwich U, in Northfield, Vermont, whereas both had connections, coming form Norwich, Vermont: Partridge and Goddard. Harriet Chase born raised in Randolph Vermont. Paternal grandmother's folks some of the originals of Norwich, Vermont. I refer you to "History of Norwich Vermont," by Goddard & Partridge

    3. Hi, happened to notice a Goddard from this Worcester, MA posting. BTW: on another subject is not Goddard College (where in VT I can't remember) now part of Norwich University, which used to be in Norwich, Vermont? The founder of Norwich, Alden Partridge, from Norwich and there WERE Goddards in Norwich also. The fire destroyed some $300 worth of property in his office, | which was fortunately covered by insurance. | | John Sloan, seven years old, son of Robert Sloan of Worcester, fell from | the railroad bridge on Southbridge street, the first part of last week, | and died in consequence on Friday. | | Thursday, 12 Dec. 1861 | P. This is the church over which Rev. Mr. Waterman is settled. | | The inhabitants of Fitchburg, at a town meeting on the 14th inst., upon | the suggestion of Dr. Hitchcock, adopted measures for the preservation, | in the archives of the public library, of "all the interesting facts, | correspondence, incidents, memorials, trophies, or patriotic sentiments, | and sacrifices which may illustrate and perpetuate to future generations | the history of the service in which the Fitchburg volunteers have been or | may be engaged." The town also appropriated $1,000, to be expended at | the discretion of the Executive Soldiers Relief Committee for the benefit | of their volunteers who now are, or who may be, in the army.--Worcester | Spy. | | Thursday, 20 Feb. 1862 | A young lady named Lizzie N. May, residing on Central street, Worcester, | was found lying on the floor of her chamber at an early hour, Monday | morning, having apparently died in a apoplectic fit. Deceased retired to | bed at an early hour, in her usual health. | | Thursday, 27 Feb. 1862 | Patrick Corbit of Oxford, MA, on Friday morning, being somewhat unwell, | took what was supposed to be oxalic acid instead of a dose of Epsom | salts: Immediately after he complained of a burning sensation in his | stomach, and soon became insensible and in less than an hour he died. | | Thursday, 6 Mar. 1862 | Mr. Wm. Goddard of Petersham, while on his way to Hardwick with a loaded | sleigh, last Monday, was struck by lightning and rendered insensible.
