You might find some good "stuff" in the Pierson Public Library at Shelburne, VT. We found a Genealogy of the Pierson family there. We found Moses Pierson, b. 1733, Newark, Morris Co, NJ, who moved with his family to Sherburne: His son, William marr. Sally Rouse. Sorry, no details or docs on Sally Rouse. Maybe other families moved from Morris Co., NJ... it's worth some study. Tom Doyle, Fresno, CA

It was suggested recently that we re-post our brick walls, so here goes.... Mine is the HALLIHAN/HALLAHAN FAMILY from Burlington. James Hallihan married Honora Hennessey. Both were from Ireland..he from Waterford Co. I don't know when or where they were married. They may have come to VT through Canada...not sure. They had at least 4 children born in Burlington between 1847 & 1857...John; Mary; Lawrence & James. Cannot find a death record for either James or Honora. Also seeking info about Lawrence who was my Great-Grandfather & who went to Chicago sometime after 1878 & never returned to his family.
Good Morning. I am looking for the person who sent me info on VERMONT WARNINGS OUT. I had downloaded it and being the novice I am, could never find it. Well I finally found it. It is so interesting and had a couple of Benjamin Watsons in the list. I want to thank this person. Joan
This list has not had much activity lately. One of the other lists I am on suggested that we submitt our brickwalls. Here is my brickwall... Joseph Hamilton was an early settler at Shelburne, arriving in the late 1780's. I have not been able to find much information on him. Joseph and his wife Anna (b ca 1765, died 1815) had 6 known children: 1). Giles b 1790, died 1795 at Shelburne. 2). Lorra b 1792, married Truman DAVID in 1812 at Shelburne and died at Steuben Co. NY after 1865. My ancestor. 3) Purlonia b 1793 died 1795. 4) Infant died 1795. 5) Joseph b 1795 married Betesy SPEAR 1816 at Shelburne. The book "THE DESCENDANTS OF GEORGE SPEAR" tells that Joseph left his wife and community and a large debt and was never heard of again. 6) Malinda "Linda", b 1802 married Levi Hurd SPEAR (brother to Betesy). Malinda died in 1891 at Highgate, Franklin Co. Vermont. Gail Clayton

His first marriage was to Talthia Bodine, born Dec. 4, 1831 in Washington Co. OH. They were married on Dec. 7,1850. She died in 1875 after bearing 15 children. Any information on any of the above would be greatly appreciated. Joan imsweet@jps.net
My question for any Chittenden Family members is, are you familiar with a W.H. Chittenden that resided in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan in 1865? The reason I ask is my Shotwell ancestors lived in Vermont between 1800-1830. They then migrated to London, Ontario, Canada. My G-Grandfather, Archibald Shotwell at the age of nineteen left Canada to enlist as a substitute in The United States Army for W.H.Chittenden. I find it interesting that a nineteen year old boy would venture so far to substitute for a total stranger. The fact that they had Vermont roots makes me think there is a link in some way to the Chittenden's from Vermont and my ancestor. My GG-Grandfather, Benjamin Shotwell was born in Vermont around 1811. I believe he is the son of Abraham Shotwell that resided in Bristol in Addison County in 1810 and 1820. I have deeds of sale with Abraham in 1815 and in the 1820 census records. If anyone has any information related to the Chittenden Family I would be interested in chatting with you. I find this to be a fascinating side story to my history. Thanks for your attention. Steve Shotwell

Is anyone having the same problem that I am. I have been receiving about 20 % of my usual mail. I am on over 90 mail lists, and seem to be getting about 15-20 of them. I have checked with my ISP and they are showing no problem... Rootsweb is denying a problem..Where is all of the mail going... I normally get 10 or so a day from NJHUNTER, KENTUCKIANA, BUSHEY, to name a few... I am getting NONE... If anyone else is having a problem, please answer me privately, as I am not getting the Rootsweb mail, and if you will, please name your ISP. I am trying to find out what the problem is. Thanks. Is there someone on this list in Burlington that would be willing to do me a favor? I would like to get a copy of an article from Vermont Life, Spring 1990 issue of Poorhouses in Vermont. I would be more than happy to reimburse any expenses. thanks Jim in Texas
Can someone tell me if the Burlington Poor House is still standing and if so, where in Burlington is it? I recently discovered that my G-grandfather died in Burlington in 1932. The death certificate that I recently obtained shows that his residence was the Poor House. I'd like to see if I can obtain any records that might still be around. Thanks Jim in Texas

Richard: We share a common ancestor. Felicite's parents were Francois Larocque dit Lafontaine and Angelique Benoit who married 2 Aug 1796 in Chambly. Their children were Angelique, Jean Baptisite, Felicite and Etienne. I descend from Jean Baptiste. I know there was at least one family named Charron in the St. Mathias area as my 2grgrandmother Marguerite Larocque married Theophile Charron there in 1878. I know that Theophile's parents were Georges Charron and Victorre Denault. Lots of your surnames here -maybe worth your investigating further?? Please forgive the multiple posts if you subscribe to several Vermont lists. But this is an important piece of history, and we wanted to be sure that anyone interested in it would hear about it. Recently a reader of these lists submitted an article dated Feb 7, 1897 from the St Albans Weekly Messenger. It paints an extremely detailed and very poignant picture of the contemporary conditions in the SHELDON County Poorhouse. The article merits reading by anyone who wishes to understand the realities of day-to-day life in many a poorhouse of the times. This is a MUST READ! Even poorhouses in vastly differing places often were constructed and operated in the manner described so meticulously in this article. While such neglect seems not to have been true for the majority of county poorhouses in the country, it was nevertheless quite common. We have posted the article in its entirety on our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com (We think you will our formatting easier to read than was the posting by e-mail.) To find the article, please go to the homepage (link above)and click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then click on VERMONT on the table of states. Near the middle of the page you will find the article highlighted in a blue box with a yellow NEW arrow. This article is of so much historic value that we will feature it on our FEATURED ARTICLES page very soon. Our thanks to Jim Carroll for caring and for taking the time to transcribe the article to share with all of us. Sincerely, Linda M. Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
Hello, In my last post to the list, I inadvertantly wrote FAIRVIEW, Chittendon Co. VT. The correct location should be FAIRFIELD. Please accept my apologies!!!! Margaret in NV
Hello Listers, I recently discovered my fourth ggrandfather in your area. I hope someone can connect. Here is what I know about him (and it isn't a whole lot <grin>). In Jan. 1795, Jehiel SMITH, of Fairview, Chittendon Co. VT, sold to his son, John SMITH, property in Hancock, Berkshire Co. MA. for the sum of 150 pounds. There was another son, named George SMITH, who was 12 years younger than John. Surely, there were other children, but I have no further information. Jehiel, may have come from NY as the 1850 census, indicates that NY was John's birthplace. This information is documented via John's Will and transcripts from the Khunrow Collection. Here is a little of what I know about John (I do have more info on John and his children). John aka John M. SMITH, b. 1769 NY? d. Mar. 1852 in Hancock, MA. Buried in Mott Cemetery in Lebanon Springs, NY. m. 1st Mindwell WADHAMS 2nd Sophia (CHAPMAN) CROCKER (no children by second marriage) Children John and Mindwell SMITH William wife unk Sylvester (my line) m. Aurelia SMALLEY who was b. in Pownal, VT Enos, m. Charlotte SHUMWAY David, m. 1st Catherine THOMPSON, m. 2nd Polly SQUIRES I am very interested in learning where and when Jehiel was born and died. His siblings, wife(s), and any other children. I would be very happy to exchange any information. I would also be delighted to accept any suggestions on where I might look for further information. Thank You, Margaret in NV
