    3. Carol - Do you have a Polly SMITH in you data base who married a Alson HURLBURT? They came to New York from Vermont. River to Cal. Co, VT Greetings from a new subscriber! My ancestral grandfather, Jonathan SMITH md Serephena PUTNAM (who descends directly from the Putnam family of Salem, who played such key role in the Salem witch trials) They lived across the river from Caledonia Co, VT, at Bath, NH. Jonathan's GG frandfather was Lt. Philip SMITH who died, ostensibly, by 'witchcraft' Jan. 10, 1685. Jonathan's dau. Lucy S. Smith md Thomas HANCOCK of Bath. Thomas and Lucy's dau, Harriet 'Eliza' HANCOCK md William Franklin WHITCHER, and they moved from Bath to Caledonia Co, VT. I've been monitoring the controversy regarding CT lists on the Caledonia Co, VT list. I had many ancestors from Cal. Co and while half of them came overland across NH to Caledonia Co, VT, half of them were from Springfield, Deerfield, Hatfield, Hadley, MA and migrated up the Connecticut River to reach Grafton Co, NH and Caledonia Co, VT. In fact, another of my line, Captain Benjamin WRIGHT, (born in 1762, probably at Northfield, MA --son of Reuben and Hannah WRIGHT of Northfield, MA) led a governmental expedition up the CT River from Northfield, MA, to explore the region of Lake Champlain (I have an extraction from his published journal of that expedition). Many of the routes this expedition took northward became the roads which are present-day main roads in Grafton Co, NH and I believe, in Caledonia Co, VT. He returned to Northfield,MA with his expedition and later returned to VT to marry and settle. His daughter, Abigail was born in Ryegate in 1791. I may be in the minority in that many of my Caledonia Co, VT ancestors trace their roots down the CT River to Northfield and Springfield and Deerfield, and of those who migrated from eastern MA, many came from CT. Had I not been researching these lines for 18 years, perhaps I'd not have gotten back far enough to know that my Caledonia Co, VT lines origininated in MA and some in CT and that the Connecticut River played a key role in their migration. While the controversial lists probably pertain directly to many of our ancestors or Caledonia Co, VT, I'm sure that to many subscribers they are not pertinent. I just thought I'd contribute my ancestry and how it does pertain. Carol Ashby
