If we're positive the message has a specific connection to Caledonia, I have no problem with a forward. Otherwise, I don't think it's appropriate. Yes, families did migrate from other locations, and clues are helpful, but let's make sure there IS a Caledonia link, if we decide to forward. And I'd like to see long headers edited down to just the bare facts, like the e-mail address of the poster, and perhaps the date of the posting. A general message to the list, with sub info to other lists that we might be interested in, would serve the same purpose as forwarding large amounts of mail from that list. The "just delete it if you receive duplicates" argument, is the very reason that we have many many small lists in the first place, rather than one huge list. Years ago, the only list available was Roots-L. It was a great list, however, you received large amounts of mail from everyone in the *world*, most of it of no specific interest to your own research, so there were large amounts that had to be deleted every day. The smaller surname and location lists allow us to only receive mail about people and places we're actually researching, without wasting time deleting unwanted mail. Several years ago I lived through the flame war of the "just delete it" people, against the "let's split into several smaller specific lists" people, and it was not pleasant. For me, the multiple smaller lists where I can choose the mail I want to read is a much better system. Just my opinions, since you asked.
