    1. [VTCAL] Methodist Rev. Silas F. WIGGINS - Sutton, VT/Dolly F. BEAN - Sandwich, NH

    3. In the VT Historical Magazine for Sutton, it mentions a Rev. Silas F. WIGGINS. It does not state where he came from...does anyone know? He arrived in Sutton in 1820. He was converted in 1823 and soon commenced to preach. He went to NH and preached until his health failed and he came back - about 1850. (pg 18) Anyone know where he went in NH? Also, on pg. 44 it lists the longevity of persons who are buried in Sutton. Of those persons listed there is Dorothy WIGGINS 75 and Silas WIGGINS 81y. Rev. Silas WIGGINS is also noted as an untimely death, by hanging. In the John BEAN from Exeter book it states that Dolly F. BEAN d/o Andrew & Betsey (SINCLAIR) BEAN married a 'WIGGINS'. Since Dolly is a derivative of Dorothy they could be the same. I do not find a WIGGINS in the 1850 NH Census that has a wife named Dorothy/Dolly that would 'fit' my Dolly BEAN was born 23 October 1809 in Sandwich, NH. The wife of Silas in the 1850 Census for Sutton, VT is 42y old and born in NH. Though there are numerous WIGGINS/WIGGIN in the census for the area, so I may have missed one or two... Dolly had a brother Silas Frye BEAN b. 03 October 1807. Silas BEAN was also a clergyman though he was a Free Will Baptist minister. This leads me to believe that Silas F. WIGGINS was from the Sandwich, NH area and returned there after he went to Sutton. I would speculate that their parents were neighbors/friends/relatives as the share a name. I do not know much about Betsey's SINCLAIRs siblings, mother, etc... When Silas WIGGINS went to Sutton he was but 15y old. I may be a protective mother but that seems rather young to be out in the world, but in those days perhaps it wasn't for a boy/man/male. Perhaps that is why I do not find him on an 1830/1837 census for NH or VT - perhaps he stayed with relatives. Dolly would have been 21 in 1830, they could have been married by then. On the 1850 census there is one child listed - Charles P. 12y, born in VT. That would have him born in 1838, but in VT. Is there anyone out there familiar with these lines? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Cherryl

    3. My great great grand father Byron WOOD purchased his first farm when 14 years old two years later he had improved it with the help of his brothers and sold it and purchased one twice the size then improved that and when about 19 or 20 opened one of the first farm cooperatives in Wisconsin so yes males were on there own when that age and many were apprenticed at age 11 or 12.
