Hello. If you know where he was inducted into the service or sometimes where he last lived as a veteran of WW1 through Vietnam the local Veterans office will have a copy of his DD214 file. Also they will usually in his file show when he entered the service, mothers & fathers name, marriage date & if there was an allotment. Than sometimes the latest portion of his medical. Tell them mostly if someone can go to the office that you would like to acquire a Xerox copy of the DD214. If you run into a problem you can usually contact your local VFW & they can guide you. If all this does not work let me know & I can explain another way to acquire data, but this is the easiest. I am a veteran. Thanks. Art Kay [email protected]
Hello Harman. You sure know how to impress people, especially me, with your list of Gray names. Thank you very much. Art Kay [email protected]
Dear List, I notice more traffic on this line in the last few weeks. If I can, I'd like to post my request once again. I'm looking for someone who might know the person or surname of Gerald E. THURSTON, of Hardwick, Vermont. He was born in 1924 (stories are conflicting as to where) but spent his childhood and adolescent years in Hardwick, living with either his parents or his grandparents. They eventually sent him to a military school for a few years. (Is there a military school around this part of the county?) One night, in the middle of the night, all the students were rousted out, told they had 1 hour to get their duffle bags packed, they were going to fight the war (WWII). Gerry was sent to Ft. Benning, in 1941, as soon as he finished a short boot camp, and he told me he became one of our county's FIRST paratroopers. He made his first jump over Italy, I think, and was shot almost immediately, sent to England to recouperate, then sent back to the front, where his patrol was wiped out, except for 3 men, who were all captured and were sent to one POW camp after another, tortured, and used as guinea pigs. The Russians were the first to free him in 1945, and he spent time in Tampa Florida. He and his wife, Carita, raised 9 kids, and Gerry became a Fire Captain around Zephyrhills, (Tampa) the 60's. The rest of the story is too sad, and in 1998, he died in Pensacola, FL, leaving a sad split with most of his 9 kids. One brave daughter is trying to "re-discover" her Dad, learning genealogy the hard way. He had once told me that his kids wanted nothing to do with him! Actually, it seems that HE just didnt want the kids worrying about HIM! Now, here we are in Florida some 55 years later, and I meet Gerry about 1982 or so---and he told me this story, above. Daughter Melanie wants desperately to "know more about her Dad and his family." All we remember is Hardwick was his home, and either his parents or grandparents raised him, until they put him in the military school, and he went off to war! Anyone have any ideas?? I know, I know, it would help if we came up there. I'm her Dad's brief friend, in Pensacola, and she lives another 500 miles away in Tampa---travel for her right now is impossible. We have written for Social Scty application---guess we should try for his military record. Thanks, if you have any ideas! He may have been born in Germany! Evan R. STROHL

Hello Steven. Thank you for your information. All I have is John Simpson My GGG Grandfather on the Simpson side married Lydia Gray born in Sheffield. In a real old book I can hardly make out with a 30 power magnifier I think I see Sarra (Hill) & Joh & nothing else is legible. End of story, this is all I know. When you say there are 2 Gray families does this mean they are not related to each other? Thank you again. Art Kay
Hello. I am sorry but I think I lost your message. All I see is the previous message from Mary Ellen. Could you send your message again. Thank You. Art Kay

It only has 2 prior to 1900. I think Danville, Peacham and Lyndonville (Cobleigh Library) have their respective towns. I'm not sure on the years. Rose
Dear Art, I have Gray ancestors from Sheffield, and found that the LDS library has filmed the vital record books from Sheffield, and I found my people in those records. I viewed the film at my local FHC. My people were in Sheffield until 1860s, so they were there a little earlier than yours. I don't recall how late the records went to. The idea of town reports is good. Someone also suggested to me the book on Sheffield that they suggested to you, but I was told that there wasn't a lot of genealogical information in it. Good luck. -Mary Ellen Moulton, Plaistow, NH
Art, I have "Through Hopes, and Dreams, and Evergreens" published by the Sheffield Historical Society, Inc. please offer up more information on the Simpson family. I will check out the publication for you. Also, the USGENWEB. COM list all states broken down by counties, lots of information out there. Hello Thank you for the information on Sutton & its neighboring towns. I have had a hard time acquiring information out of Vermont. Its probably because I am not sure what I am doing trying to acquire information. I have been able to acquire a lot of information from Nova Scotia & New Hampshire because there rootweb sites are jamming with questions & answers, but I see very little out of Vermont. I have been looking for information on the Simpson family for many years in the Sheffield area. Now I am also looking for information on the name of Ford in Sheffield. I am on the Ford rootweb site, but there information on Ford is jammed with information from most states, but nothing from Vermont. Is there a way I can acquire some guidance on acquiring information? I live on the West Coast & will be moving to Arizona next month. Thank you very much for your information, I really appreciate it.
