    2. Diane; I can tell you a little bit about your James Bailey, but I am afraid that this is going to debunk some of the family stories. First, James was born in Bradford, Mass (it was his son, also named James, who was born in Newburyport, Mass) on 11 Feb 1722 (not Feb 11 1720/1721). He had 11 children The two you did not list are Abigail who was born in Newburyport about 1746, and Charles. His birthplace and date are unknown to me. James was not one of the first settlers of Peacham, but he was an early settler. He was not there during the French and Indian War, however. In fact, Peacham was not there! The French and Indian War began in 1754. Peacham was founded by Deacon Jonathan Elkins in 1775, and the first (only?) blockhouse was built shortly thereafter, during the Revolution. James was a "town official" but I can not find out what office he held in the records that I have. Hope that this helps a little. Vincent Falter

    3. Hi everyone, Is anyone working on the Willards? Reuben Willard married Abigail Nelson, the daughter of Samuel Nelson and his wife Abigail Tasker in or around Barnstead, NH in 1806. He is in Barnstead in the 1810 census. Presumably he died around 1818/19, when Abigail moved lst to Wheelock and then to Sheffield, where she had family, and her youngest child is reported as being born about 1818. Among their children were sons Samuel (b.1808), Paul and Richard. (I'm descended from Samuel who married Margaret Gray (dau. of Henry--and that's another story.) For years I'd assumed that Reuben was the son of another Reuben Willard(I) of the Lancaster, MA area and his wife Catherine Parkhurst. Now it appears that their son Reuben (II) is someone else entirely, and MY Reuben appears to have just magically appeared, married, fathered 6 children and disappeared in the margin of less than 15 years! How he got to Barnstead to meet Abigail is unknown, since there are no Willard families in the general area of Barnstead according to the 1790 & 1810 Census records. I made a trip from California to VT for a family reunion in July, but due to family illnesses got ONLY 1 HOUR of genealogy in, and that in the Cobleigh Library where I saw the Mathewson papers on the Willards. He hadn't been able to trace/place Reuben either. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, comments or ideas. Deborah Deborah J. 3. The book can be purchased from Delores Ham, Sheffield Historical Society, Sheffield, VT 05866. The cost is not on the binding. The book is not indexed, so it is difficult to look for names, but I do see the following: p. 8 John Willey was among the organizers of the town in 1796. I scanned through some other sections, and don't see anything. Certainly I could have missed something. For some of the smaller cemeteries, burials are listed. I don't see any Willeys or Pipers, however. Have fun on your trip. It's pretty country. Cindy Walcott Grand Isle, VT -----Original Message----- From: Bonnie S. 3. I'm always looking for connections (direct or collateral) to my BAILEY of Vermont family (the different family groups lived in different counties). The James Bailey family were residents of Peacham, Caledonia Co. James BAILEY, b. Feb 11, 1720/1721, in Newbury, Essex Co., MA. James d. Apr 24, 1808, in Peacham, Caledonia Co., VT. The 1st spouse of James was: Rachel BERRY, and they married about 1745 in Greenland, Rockingham Co. NH. Their children:Hannah, Rachel, James. Mary, Esther, Joshua, Abijah, Benjamin, Luther The 2nd spouse of James was: Mary KINCAID, and they wed sometime after 1762. He was one of the first settlers of Peacham, Vermont. During the French and Indian War, his home in Peacham was the only Block house in town. James was supposedly a Town Official in early Peacham. I have no proof that any of the above is true :) Please contact me if you can "relate" to this family unit or provide directions for obtaining documentation. Thanks. Diane Decker-Warneke

The first settlement was in 1794. The families were from Barrington, NH and settled in the southern part of town - they were the families of John and Richard Jenness, and James and Jonathan Gray. They were soon joined by Moses Foss, Ardchelaus Miles, Daniel Heard, and Stephen and Samuel Drown. Cindy Walcott Grand Isle, VT

    3. We also have the census records which would have him listed. My husband was in the 101st Airborne, training at Fort Benning, GA., during WW2. His place of battle was in Holland and Belgium, during the "Battle of the Bulge". Your Gerry Thurston must have been very young, as my husband born 1919 was young and he was older than your boy. I understand the Paratroopers were among the most gallant and brave men in our service. My husband was wounded once, and then went back again after recovery, and was dreadfully wounded again.......at which point he was not useful to fight. I don't know about your person, but my husband had no "Psychological therapy" whatsoever, after returning, and the impact of the war experiences has had some devistating effects upon him and his life. The same may have been true for yours. Whatever his kids might think, he was a good man, among the BEST. The Veterans Administration may be able to help also, in that they may have some history on him.
