Hello. Thank you, this is where I acquired the information from. I have had the paper on line for some time. I am looking just looking for more information on Mr. Simpson. Earlier today I placed all the names from October 8-14 on the VTCALEDO. I wish I could go back in time with the paper but I don't see any stored files for the news paper like some of the Canadian papers have. One of the PEI papers I was able to go back & copy all of last years Births & deaths. Thank you for thinking of me & my quest, it is very well appreciated. Art Kay [email protected]

The neighboring town of St.Johnsbury had a newspaper. Their address is: Caledonian-Record, Federal Street, St.Johnsbury, Vermont 05819. They also have a web site but I doubt if their archives are on it anywhere. Hi All, I have never had an opportunity to contribute to this list, only ask questions. But a year or so ago, a SIAS descendant and I had a brief exchange, and having now seen two SIAS references, both connecting with Danville, Caledonia, I'm sending this on. If inappropriate, I apologize in advance. I was recently reviewing some material and came upon an entry that someone may have interest in. The quotation comes from: Historic Encyclopedia of Illinois, edited by Newton Bateman, LL. D. and Paul Selby, A. M., Vol II, McHenry County Citizens, Munsell Publishing Co., 1903, Chicago, Ill. I believe this was a subscription history or something of that nature, so it should not be taken at face value. In fact, I have found several errors of fact in the book. Nevertheless, in most of the contents which I have reviewed, it is correct. "Newell S. Colby, farmer and stock-breeder, was born at Danville, Vt., Oct 13, 1826, and in 1840, when fourteen years of age, came with his father to McHenry. During the winter of 1841-2 he attended a school taught by Archelaus Sias in the north end of what was known as "Brown's Log-Cabin Tavern." This was the first public school ever taught in McHenry, although Elder Wheeler had taught a private boarding school at an previous date date. Sias was the son of a Methodist minister at Danville, Vt., and had come west with the family of Ira Colby for the purpose of selling the "Sias Improved Family Medicines" prepared by his father. The younger Sias sold these medicines to the pioneer settlers for some time, after which he engaged in the mercantile business at McHenry, but finally went, in company of Dr. Brown of McHenry, to California, where he died." Last year, in obtaining copies of some Colby-related documents from the Danville Town Office (very pleasant and helpful folks, by the way), I noticed they were signed by Archelaus Sias, Town Clerk, and dated 1836 and 1853. Perhaps this Archelaus was the father of the younger mentioned above? Would someone have been a Methodist minister and Town Clerk at the same time? Brian
I don't know if you have this info or not. But there was a Tamar Heath born 9th October 1818 in Stanstead, Quebec, parents Isaac Heath and Rhoda Aldrich. Dot
Cindy: Thanksfor the material on Col. John Bean Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I am looking for record of a marriage between Robert Moor/Moore and Hannah Bean. They were probably married in Wheelock 1816-1822. To Shari Seymour: Col. John Bean had a daughter Mary b. Dec. 04, 1792 that could be the one i your tree. George Moore Iowa
George: You are in luck - I had just finished typing out some information on Bean for another list member when your message arribed! The following are not quotes, but summaries of information. p. 33 Col. John Bean was born in Canterbury, NH August 1751. He was one of the original lessess and came to Wheelock probably in 1793. He was a sergeant in the train band in Caterbury at the outbreak of the Revolution. He enlisted as sergeant in Capt. Gordon Hutchins' Co., Col. John Stark's regt in April 1775 and served until August 1775. He was in the Battle of Bunker Hill. (more about his Revolutionary service, which I will type out if you do not already have it.) He died in Wheelock 7 May 1814 and is probably married on the farm on which he lived. p. 43 Among those men chosen to organize the first meeting house in 1796 were John Bean. p. 46 Col. John Bean had the following original lots: half of Lots 65 and 66 and all of lot 86. Early town meetings were often held at his house. He was a lineal desc. of John Bean of Exeter [note: hopefully you have seen the extensive Clan MacBean genealogy -- I am also a John Bean desc. - my grandmother was Marjorie (Bean) Walcott from Glover, VT). He married Hannah, dau. of Samuel and Hannah (Dolofff) Ames. They had nine children born in Canterbury: John, Joseph, Hannah, Samuel, Sarah, James, David, Mary and Asa. He was prominant in early town affairs and was representative to the state legislature in 1794-6, 1799 and 1805. p. 31 [quoted in previous message] - Tradition says the Joseph Bean and Annie Dow were the first couple married in Wheelock. [Note -- Nancy and Annie are names that seems often to apply to the same person -- I am not sure which is a nickname for the other!] Cindy Walcott Grand Isle, VT -----Original Message----- From: Moores [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, October 10, 1999 8:48 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [VTCALEDO] Wheelock Dear Cindy, I am very interested in the background of Col. This is a summary about the of early settlers of Wheelock from: Jones, Eleanor Jones. Town of Wheelock. Vermont's Gift to Dartmouth College. Rochester, VT: Emerson Publishing Company, 1961. The earliest settlers were from Canterbury, NH, persuaded to settle there by Abraham Morrill, agent for Dartmouth and former resident of Canterbury. These included Abner and Barnard Hoyt, who had settled earlier in Danville. Their brother Thomas remained in Danville. The first settlers of Wheelock were Joseph and Abigail (Morrill)Page. They came after their marriage on Christmas Day 1788. They were soon joined by Abraham Morrill and Dudley Sweasy/Swazey. Sweasy was born in Exeter, removed to Louden, NH and came to Danville before 1792. He married Apphia Lougee of Exeter, published 21 FEb 1796. He and his wife are buried in N. Danville. The following is a list of the original proprietors of Canterbury, NH (dated 20 May 1727)whose names are repeated among the early settlers of Wheelock: Chesley, Davis, Stevens, Woodman, Kenniston, Coffin, Gray, Mathews, Jones, Emerson, Follet, Sias, Willee, Sanburne, Glines, Odiorne, Jenness. At the time of the 1790 census, Wheelock had the following heads of household: Bracket, Fisk, Dowe, Glines, Joseph Harris, Peter Porter, Ephraim Miles, Dudley Swezy and Joseph Venan. Other early residents were Gideon Leavitt, Samuel Sargent and Samuel Leach before 1792. Before March 1793 were Thomas Noyes, John Curris, Josiah Hines, John Ames. Before March 1794 were Col. John Bean, Lt. Amos Sawyer, Abner Hoyt, Sargent Morrill, Jonathan Dow, Merrill Clement, Danile Noyes, Pardon Spooner. Before March 1794 were Dr. William Guy, Thomas Wright, James Sherburn, Obil Shattuck, Achaelous Woodman, Thomas Oman, Sherburn Dearbon, Jeremiah Gray, John Boynton, Moses Willey. Before March 1795 were Daniel Folsom, Joseph Bean, Robert Brown, Nathan Smith, Taylor Norris, John Gray, John Woodman, Thomas Locke, Nathaniel Hayward, Jonathan Hobbs Sanborn, and James Cate. These men were all elected to town offices in the years named. [Note -- some of these names appear among the early settlers of Sheffield -- the Grays for example, who settled near the town line. Guess they wandered over the line early.] Ichabod Brackett, David Allard, James Thompson, John Webber, Samuel Ward, Henry Marsh, Samuel Fifeld, Thomas Otis, Simeon Brackett and Nathaniel Elkins were in town before 1796. According to tradition, the first child born in town was John Wheelock Leach. The first recorded birth is Henry Sherburn on 7 Mar 1795. Tradition says the first marriage was of Joseph Bean and Annie Dow. There are BRIEF sketches of these men: John Allen, Col. John Bean, Ephraim Bigelow, Jonathan Bradley, Benjamin Carter, Lt. James Cate, Ebenezer Chandler, Merrill Clement, Joseph Conner, Lt. Daniel Cross, Moses Darling, Ens. Samuel Fifield, Jonas Flagg, Jonathan Folsom, Lt. James Gline, Nathaniel Hayward, Abner Hoyt, Gideon Leavitt, Capt. Edward Magoon, James Miner, Abraham Morrill, Sargent Morrill, Ephraim Niles, Joshua Otis, David Pillsbury, Lt. Nehemiah Phillips, Jonathan Hobbs Sanborn, James Sherburn, Thomas Townshend, Capt. Joshua WEek, John Woodman. If any of these men are your ancestors, I can tell you what information is in the sketch. I have this book from the library for the next couple of weeks. It does not contain genealogies, and is somewhat scantily indexed. Cindy Walcott Grand Isle, VT
