Seeking any documentary mention of St. Johnsbury notable. Probate Court Judge WALTER PERRIN SMITH, [b. Hardwick, VT 4 Nov 1841,d 1918] his mother SOPHRONIA PERRIN, [perhaps of Randolph or Bethel, VT, d. 15 Oct 1887], his father JOHN S. SMITH [blacksmith, d. 5 May 1886, his wife SUSAN A. HOLBROOK [daughter of Dr. PERLEY R. HOLBROOK and LOUISE M. LAWRENCE] their Child ROBERT HOLBROOK SMITH, MD [b. 8 Aug 1879] and any of their ancestors. I'm especially interested in knowing whether or not this Sophronia Perrin is any relation to SOPHRONIA BELKNAP PERRIN, [b. c1791], married 25 Dec 1810 in Randolph, VT to WALTER PERRIN [b. Royalton, VT 5 Mar 1787, ] resided in Hardwick, 1870. I'd be very grateful for any assistance from any source. Thanks, Tom Perrin
Just a note for those of you who may request a look-up in Caledonia County. Most of the information is located by reference to the town, not the county. Many of the published sources do not have indexes, and to do a look-up often involves going through the text. "Childs" is an example of this, and if we don't have the name of a town or towns, it is quite difficult. Dates are also important -- to the extent you can give us a date or at least a time frame. Also, if you have names of spouse, siblings, etc., it may be helpful. In other words, give us as much of the essential information as you have and it will help at this end. Thanks Harman Clark Sheffield, VT 05866 [email protected]

I have added a new free download at http://members.xoom.tfeeney/downloads.html It is "Walton's Vermont Register and Farmers" Almanac, 1863," The calandar and phases of the moon are not in it, but the register which includes who was who from the state of Vermont who were Attorneys, Clerks of Courts, Masons, Merchants and Traders, Milita, Newspapers, Senators, etc. are included. Also, I have listed at my eBay auction at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=210674795 is "The Vermont Historical Gazetteer, Vo. II" by Abby Maria Hemenway. This is one of several volumes written by Hemenway for the state of Vermont. This particual volume deals with the counties of Chittenden, Franklin, Grand-Isle, Lamoille, and Orange. Anyone familiar with Hemenway's works will know what a great resource, and wealth of information her books contain. If you are not interested in buying the book itself, you can purchase the cd in pdf format from my Historical and Genealogical book store at the url included in my signature below. I am interested in *Palmer,* and migration from Canada, earlier from England (Devon?). I'm not sure if my line is connected to the family recently mentioned by Dick Bolt or not. It is very difficult to tie my Frank Palmer into any lines mentioned, because I don't have any other names connected with him. Except his mother, Rose Smith and her parents: Edward and May Smith. They were actually in Essex county (Victory) though I think that may be Caledonia County today, isn't that right? Speaking of Palmers (I'm not sure if I mentioned this before), does anybody know anything about the Palmer family that runs the cleaners and laundry in St. Johnsbury? That business has been there a long time, judging from the sign. We have a Mary Britton from RI in Upper VT? will this help ?
It's hard to tell from this message who is researching the Palmer line and also the Minor line together (as listed below). I would like to connect with that person. I have Grace Palmer, born 9 May 1612 England, died 12 Oct 1690 Stonington, New London, CT married 23 Apr 1634 Charlestown, Suffolk, MA, to Thomas Miner, born 23 Apr 1608 Chew Magna, Somersetshire, England, died 23 Oct 1690 Stonington, New London, CT Is this your line also? If so, I descend from their son Clement Miner, born 8 Mar 1638 Hingham, Plymouth, MA, down through Hannah Miner, born 1 Aug 1758 New London, CT, who married into the Huntley family ca. 1779, Moses Huntley. Moses and Hannah Miner Huntley first settled in Walpole, Cheshire, NH, and later migrated to St. Johnsbury, Caledonia, VT. Please let me know, Thanks, Cheri Cheron Gibson San Diego, CA Linda N wrote: > > I am interested in *Palmer,* and migration from Canada, earlier from England > (Devon?). Hi Marci I checked the Index to Hemenway and could find no reference to the names you list. All volumes of Hemenway are very hard to find and very expensive. I will gladly check the index for anyone, before they make a major investment. The index alone is 1118 pages in length. The series covers all counties except Windsor, Abby's home county. She died before doing Windsor County. List When I originally saw the request for information about a Tonic Salesman , I was sure that someone would come up with some amazing tales . True to form, we've been seeing just that for days now. There will always be a variety of legitimate explanations for regional semantics and usually that in itself is entertaining to most people. One thing in particular in researching is ....to bear in mind the period in time that is being used. If I remember correctly, the time-frame referenced was at the turn of the last century. From the eighteen-seventies right up through the ninteen-twenties, quite often being called a tonic saleman ; snake-oil merchant; drummer or a gypsy was a denigrating term referenced and most often was meant to imply an entrepreneur with negative or questionable business ethics. These are some of the origins for american humor which often began with "Didja hear the one about the travlin salesman and the .....? " Thanks for the memories ! Dave Pierce

Hi Sue -- I don't have information on Silas, but may be able to research it. What I do have is some data on Charlotte Walter (b. 6 Nov. 1803), her parents, John Walter, Jr. and Euneca (or Eunice) Blakeley, and Charlotte's siblings. They all lived in East Haven, VT which is in Essex County -- next to Caledonia County. Do you have more information on Silas Thurber? Such as where he was born, name of his spouse, any siblings?
