St Johnsbury [or Kirby]; mother Sophronia E Hill; father Ferdinand Harvey.) Neither Artemas nor Martha were found in the 1880 census for Windsor Co., VT. Martha Harvey was the only one of Ferdinand and Sophronia's children who did not move from St.Johnsbury, VT to California in late 1871 or 1872. I have thus far been unable to determine where/who Martha lived with from the time her family left VT until the time of her marriage in 1878. FTM CD # 322 gives the following information re : Artemus H WOOD : Artemus H. Wood : 1900 Federal Census; Lynn, Essex Co., MA; Microfilm Roll Number 644; Microfilm Page # 40 I would like to make contact with anyone knowledgeable of this WOOD family in Vermont or Lynn, Essex Co., MA ca. 1880 -- 1900; or with this HARVEY family of Caledonia Co., VT, between 1801 to 1872 . I have a fairly extensive HARVEY data base and would like to exchange information with interested relatives. This Harvey family has an earlier marriage into the Luther WOOD family of VT but I have not been able to connect Artemus to this Vermont WOOD family Also, if anyone has an opportunity to take a look at the aforementioned 1900 Lynn census to see who else is listed as being in the family it would certainly be of help. An e-mail message of findings would be fine -- if Martha is located I will order the 1900 and 1910 Lynn census films for viewing at my FHC. I live in northern California and have a good FHC to use but the supply of MA census films is limited. Thanks --Bill Harvey [email protected]

    3. Am unable to complete genealogy on my ggg grandfather a (John) Phillip Nicholas Vermouth (or Wermuth). He married a Betsey Kidder in Waterford, VT on 19 Nov 1823. We believed he changed name from Wermuth to Vermouth upon arrival in this country. In fact he registered all four daughters at one time, using Wermuth! Sons were listed as Vermouth! Presumably buried at Passumpsic Cemetery (near Waterford town line). In History of Barnet, VT (by Frederic Palmer Wells) Pg. #191 states: "Several revolutionary soldiers are buried there. Philip Vermouth a German, a soldier in Napoleon's Army is the Russian Campaign, who is remembered by the oldest people, is also one of the occupants of that cemetery." Evidently all Passumpsic cemetery records were burned in the 1920's. I have physically been unsuccessful in locating markers. Phillip registered for the 1850 Census as a German (page #248, Waterford,VT) Had interests in Barnet, Waterford and a property owner in St. Johnsbury. Could not find his name as deceased through VT vital statistics. He perhaps drifted down from Canada. His wife Betsey, died 3 Mar 1855, at Passumpsic Village 15 Feb 1885 and was a member of the Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury and I believe buried at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Would there be anyone with any further information regarding Phillip? Perhaps obits from St. Johnsbury Caldedian Record newspaper? Other suggestions? Thanks. Bob Vermouth in Florida

    1. [VTCALEDO] Gray Family -- Hannah, wife of William Gray
    2. Harman Clark
    3. I have raised questions as to identity of Hannah, wife of William Gray. William was a son of James 1 Gray and his wife, Tamson ______ (sometimes seen as "Hillary" --not the one you think! -- but with no sources cited and seemingly without any justification). William's wife is often called Hannah Foss. I have to ask, again, for something to justify the "Foss". Some time ago I was told she was "Hannah Foss d/o Joshua, of Rye, N.H, c. 1749". There is no source cited. Joshua and Sara (Wallis) Foss had a daughter Hannah, of the age to have married William Gray, but that Hannah is recorded with marriage 21 August 1741, to Samuel Sanders of the Shoals. Gen. Dict. Maine & N.H., Libby, Noyes & Davis, page 240. All other Hannahs in the Foss Genealogy, and in Parsons' History of Rye, N.H., seem to have other spouses. There was also a reference to the typescript by Guy S. Rix, who shows Hannah Foss as a daughter of Samuel Foss and Mary Dowrst. Frankly I cannot even find a Samuel Foss who had a wife named Mary Dowrst. [Samuel Foss, son of John 1 Foss, had a grandson, Samuel, who married an Abigail Dowst in 1726] I saw that typescript at the NEHGS Library in Boston, and came away with the following comments -- [these notes pertain to John Foss, the immigrant Foss, but convey my thoughts on the Rix paper]. We have found three main "sources" for the Foss family. The most reliable is the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire [Noyes-Libby-Davis] at page 240. Parsons also has a section on the Foss Family in his History of Rye, N.H., page 344+. The least reliable seems to be a typewritten copy of a manuscript in possession of the NEHGS, Boston, entitled "Genealogy Of The Foss Family Of America" compiled by Guy S. Rix, Concord, N.H. These three works have considerable differences, and we have included the Noyes-Libby-Davis conclusions, except where noted, being mainly where they do not cover the families involved. According to the Dix paper, John Foss was born in Rebe, Denmark, Jan. 3, 1638, and "it is said by tradition that he arrived in Boston, Mass., on a Brittish war vessel, on which he was employed as a calker. While the vessel was lying in Boston Harbar, he deserted by jumping overboard and swimming ashore, escaping further service." Dix also gives his first wife as Mary Chabourn, born in 1644, daughter of William and Mary Chadbourn, and granddaughter of William Chadbourn who came over in the employ of Capt. John Mason to build a mill at Newichwannock (South Berwick, Me.)." Dix goes on to state that he married, second, Jan 25, 1686, to Sarah Goss, widow of James Goss, as recorded in probate records of York County, Maine, page 103, book one and "He married third, Elizabeth Berry, daughter of William and Jane Berry, and widow of John Locke, who was killed by Indians on Dover Plains, June 26, 1696." [In addition to obvious errors, the Danish ancestry seems to be without foundation or documentation, and the Dix paper is not considered reliable]. Noyes-Libby-Davis, at page 240, has him as "+\- 30 in 1666, +\- 46 in 1680, first app. in division of 1661 as of 1657, likely in his wife's right. . . . He m. Mary Berry (12), grantor with him in 1673, liv. (or his son's w.) in 1700." They show Mary as the sister of Elizabeth Berry who married John Locke. This is consistent with the Locke Genealogy and other sources, and Dix is clearly in error. Parsons, in his History of Rye, page 345, simply states that John Foss "being pleased with the location, came to Rye, where he was admitted into the family of John Berry, and married his daughter." [Actually she was William Berry's daughter; John Berry was a son of William]. Anyone have anything to help on this? Harman Clark Sheffield, VT 05866 [email protected]

    1. RE: [VTCALEDO] Miles
    2. Cindy Walcott
    3. Harman Clark is probably the best one to shed light on this. This first Tamson (according to John's scheme) was wife of James. Some believe her last name was Hillary, but I don't know where this information comes from. The second Tamson, was the wife of John WILLEY, according to Harman. I have information that suggests that Tamson, wife of Elijah Libby b. abt 1798 was Tamson DROWN, daughter of Moses DROWN and his second wife Lois ALLARD. Lois m. third Joseph GRAY, one of the sons of William and Hannah (FOSS) Gray. This is pieced together from secondary sources, including an Ancestral File submission, and should be treated as speculation. Cindy Walcott Grand Isle, VT -----Original Message----- From: John W. I suppose after her grandmother. She was born 1758 and married a Hilley or Hillery. I hope I have you sufficiently confused as I hate to be the only one with this problem. ...John ([email protected])

    2. There were two John Foss living in the same area. One used the name Fost at times to distinguish himself from the other Foss. I have been trying to sort them out. Have your tried looking at the Chadbourne info, the one who married the other John Foss (Fost). Dot
