Hello Darrell. loved reading your message about Vermont. My ancestors came from Ireland and settled in Vermont and I was lucky to go to a reunion there. Vermont is really beautiful and I do enjoying reading about the 1800's, helps to feel that you know your ancestors a little better. Mine lived in Richmond, Bolton and Jerico from 1855 - 2000. Searching surnames: Tobin - Nash - Farnsworth Thanks for sharing your memories, May you have a wonderful holiday season. Charlene Tobin Rodriguez California

Hi, everybody: A very merry Christmas to you all. I'm off to work, to change some backup tapes -- and use the T-1 line ALL by myself! My children and I exchanged gifts day before yesterday, and my son has flown to visit his mother in Phoenix. My daughter is recovering from working the last few days, and will spend the day at friends, whenever she decides to get up. We have a BEAUTIFUL white Christmas here in the Chicago area, although most of the native Illinoisans are tired of winter already. Still, it reminds me of home in Vermont. I think I'll take some pictures outside at work, too. The property has a small forest preserve on two sides. This is the first Christmas since the early 1800's that the old Dutton farmhouse in the Dutton District of Springfield, Vermont will not have anyone living in it. Since there is nobody to carry on farming there, my aunt has done the only sensible thing and sold it. My grandfather and great-grandfather were both born in that house. . . . I can still taste the doughnuts my grandmother cooked on the old wood stove there. She could regulate the temperature on that thing to a tenth of a degree, I think, and she wouldn't give it up even though my grandfather asked her many times if he couldn't buy her a gas stove. I think he may have been trying to get out of chopping wood <grin>. I realize now (having been exposed to Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Creme) that if you put three of grammie's doughnuts on a rope, you could anchor a rowboat with them; but what I wouldn't give for the taste of one now, and a view out the farmhouse kitchen window toward Mount Ascutney. Just rambling, and getting a bit misty eyed. I would like to remind everybody, not that you need it really, that this is the time of year that brand-new computers get hooked up to the Internet and many newbies decide that this is the time to "do their family tree", expecting to get it all done by New Year's. We know how hopeless that task is, but they may not. . . . Have patience and mercy, and put up with their foibles in the same spirit as the One who started this whole Christmas thing by sending us the most precious gift possible, in spite of our attitude toward Him. And a happy New Year, new century, and new millenium to all as well (no, it WASN'T last year <big grin>). Jack, I checked my History of Barnet information and don't see Menirva Strobridge. However, many Gilkersons and Strobridges moved from Barnet to Will and Kankakee Counties in Illinois in about 1855 soooo we are probalby related in some way. For instance, the following are some of Janet Strobridge's siblings: Meroe married Andrew Strobridge. No information on descendants. Parnel married David Gilkerson (moved to Kankakee County) Jane was Bartholomew Gilkerson's 2nd wife (lived in Will County) Helen married Alexander Stewart Sometimes it seems like half of Barnet moved to Illinois then. Also, Janet's father, Ebenezer had many siblings and I do not know who all their descendants are. You could check the History of Barnet and History of Ryegate for more information. Also, there is a book I have not seen yet called the "The Strobridge Geneaology". Someone mailed me a few pages on my Janet and her father going back - I don't see Minerva listed there. Another idea: I assume you got Minerva's wedding date from the online Illinois Marriage Index. Have you ordered their marriage license? One of my ancestors was a few months short of 18 and her father had to sign before she could marry. His name and signature was in the marriage license documents when I received them. I think I might have found something for you. As a last resort, I checked the few Will County 1860 Census pages I have and found a Robert Strobridge (wife Betsy) who had a daughter named Minerva (a little hard to read though). Says Minerva was 12 years old in 1860 and born in Mass. It is in the town of Wilton, I think it is page 160. I suggest you order the census microfilm. The census entry lists all the other children too. Good Luck, Carol -----Original Message----- From: Jack W. Dear List, I am new to this list and thought I would post my information. The surnames I am researching are: Thomas GILKERSON married Janet STROBRIDGE. Moved to Illinois in the 1850's. Janet Strobridge was the daughter of Ebenezer Strobridge and Elizabeth HARVEY. Thomas Gilkerson was the son of Thomas Gilkerson and Marion SOMERS. A collateral name I am researching is SMITH. Two Gilkerson daughters of Thomas Gilkerson (the younger) married two Smith brothers. I am interested in getting in touch with other descendants and have information to share. Thank you. Carol

Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring Judy, The vital records of VT have been filmed. They are alphabetical and grouped in date ranges. Have you been able to check into these? They list births, deaths, and marriage license applications (I think this is what you could call them). And both bride's and groom's could be listed. I know that the New England Historic Genealogical Society has the films.......I don't know who else. Perhaps someone on this list or another you might be on is in the Boston area and could check for you. Sorry I am not closer to check. Joyce
Hi list, My gr-grandparents were married in Burke, VT in 1872. My question is, would there have been any newspaper that might have had announcements of marriages? Or, would there be any other kind of publication? I have contacted the town clerk only to be told there was no record of my ancestors. The information I seek is a confirmation of the birth of my gr-grandmother and the marriage mentioned previously. Here is the infor I seek: Luella R. Etheridge b. January 24, 1845 in Burke, Caledonia, VT d/o Asa C. and Arsenith (George) Etheridge. Alfred Frank Pinney m. Luella R. Etheridge in Burke, Caledonia, VT on May 1st, 1872. Rite administered by Thos Trevilian, Minister. Thank you for any help you may be able to offer. Judy, in NC (a proud Yankee in Rebel territory)
