I am searching for divorce records for Lewis LINCOLN and Ruth Phipps [BANNISTER] LINCOLN, in the Pawlett (Rutland Co.) or Pownal (Bennington Co.) area of Vermont. Lewis LINCOLN, b. 16 July 1814, Lanesboro, Berkshire Co., MA, son of Jonathan A. LINCOLN and Diana (Amy/Anne) NORTHRUP. His family removed to Bennington County, VT, and later to Pawlet, Rutland County, VT between 1830-1840, [Lewis's brothers Levi and Alanson LINCOLN had a very successful carriage manufacturing business in Bennington Co.] Ruth Phipps BANNISTER, b. 26 July 1816, Pownal, Bennington Co., VT, dau. of Dr. Cranmer BANNISTER and Tryphosa MANN. Lewis and Ruth were married 10 April 1840 in Lanesborough, Berkshire County, MA., and were the parents of two children: Celestia Tryphosa "Lettie" LINCOLN, b. 14 January 1842 and Fidelia Diana LINCOLN, b. 05 June 1843; both born in Pawlet, Rutland Co., VT. Fidelia died 4 Dec. 1864 in Pawlet, of Diptheria at the age of 21 yrs. Sometime around 1865, Lewis and his daughter "Lettie" removed from VT to IL. Lettie marrying along the way (in Indiana for some reason) to Alonzo RAYNOR of Long Island. They settled in Southern Illinois in Jackson and Alexander Counties. Ruth LINCOLN did not accompany her husband and daughter to Illinois, and apparently stayed in Vermont. In the 1870 Bennington Co., Census, Ruth (54) is listed as living with her sister Juliett BANISTER (56) and her brother Thomas BANISTER. On 4 December 1866, Lewis LINCOLN married Catherine Turner SMITH, a widow, in Cairo, Alexander Co. IL. They had three children between 1866 and 1870. Since Ruth did not pass away until 14 December 1870. She and Lewis must have divorced OR he committed bigamy. Their daughter, Celestia "Lettie" had to have known about the marital status of her parents and apparentley had a good relationship with her father up the the time of his death in 1905. It seems strange to me that she would have accepted the "bigamy" and that is why I feel they must have been divorced. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in finding divorce records for Lewis and Ruth LINCOLN, which would most likely have been in either Bennington or Rutland Counties, VT. Any other information found about this family would be wonderful. Thanks to anyone who can help, Karima --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
