GILBERT HYATT - FOUNDER OF CITY OF SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC <excerpt> Gilbert Hyatt was born in Arlington, Vermont, the son of Abraham Hyatt, who had fought with Burgoyne in the Saratoga campaign in 1777. Gilbert joined the Loyal Americans under Major Jessup and served during the American Revolutionary War in this Loyalist regiment. He had several brothers: Joseph, Cornelius, Jacob and Abraham, who were also later listed as associates in Ascot Township. The family must have prospered in the end, as there are many descendants in the area with the Hyatt name. Gilbert declared, in his petition to the government in 1800, he was the first to settle in the wild lands of the Crown in the County of Bedford. By Jean Darrah McCaw, U.E., C.M.H. Today I added histories for the following towns in Rensselaer County, New York to the New York town history section of my web site: Berlin Brunswick East Greenbush Grafton Greenbush Poestenkill. These are from Landmarks of Rensselear County by George Anderson, published in 1897. The addition of these makes almost 300 town histories for New York state at my web site. I have an interest in finding anyone who might be able to help with the Henry and/or Lorenzo Beebe families of Sandgates. They were both in the 1830 census. Also I'm searching for any information on Keziah Franklin of Shaftburg. She would have been the second wife of William Franklin of Brookfield, Madison, New York. After William's death in 1840, Keziah went back to Vermont and shows up in the 1840 census, Shaftburg, Bennington, Vermont. She would have been between 60 and 70 at that time. Kathleen

Source, The Rutland (Vt) Weekly Herald--May 11, 1893. BENNINGTON COUNTY COURT. McDowell Will Be Placed on Trail This Term. MANCHESTER, May 10-- The summer term of the Bennington County court will meet here Tuesday, June 6, Judge Thompson presiding. The side judges are George J.Bend and A. E. Burton. This will be the grand jury term, and the session will probably last about four weeks. There are already entered on the docket 90 civil cases and 15 divorce cases. Of state cases there are 34, most of them being liquor cases. The most important case that will come before the court is that of William Conroy or Henry McDowell for the murder of Patrick Crowley in Glastenbury about a year ago. McDowell, who is now in the state prison at Windsor, will be brought here in time for trail. As he has no counsel the court will assign him some. The plea in his case will be self-defense, and the trail will probably take three or four days, unless he should plead guilty to manslaughter, which might be accepted by the court as there were no witnesses to the crime, and McDowell has always stuck to the story that he acted in self-defense. The case of Nicholas Gaudette, now confined in jail here for burglary in Stamford, will come before the grand jury. There are 23 chancery cases to be heard . Joan H. Bixby

I'd like very much to compare notes with any descendants (direct or otherwise) of Jacob and Betsy [Brewer] Hicks who were in Readsboro by 1818. I'm most interested in connecting with anyone who has info re their 2nd son Lorenzo Hicks who married Julia Stockwell about 1852. Thank you!
I just returned from Salt Lake City with the most interesting copies regarding Nathan Fuller in 1831 -- but I need to know more. Court records have Nathan supporting his brother John with a house, groceries, smoking tobacco, everything, until his and his wife Elizabeth's deaths. I wasn't able to discover what happened to cause this incredible sentence. Does anyone know? Thanks, Beverly Smith Vorpahl Spokane, WA
