    3. I was working on an historical project in Middlebury in July. I inquired of the Sheldon Museum in Middlebury as to whether there were an Addison County or Middlebury historical society. I was told by their director that in essence they are the closest thing. They have a research room in the lower floor of their museum building. I do not know to what extent they feel they have the personnel to handle phone or mail requests- there's usually just one staff member on duty. They do not have the local vital records- those are down the street at the town clerk's office- and that is for Middlebury only. They do have a binder of vital records prior to 1850 that a volunteer has abstracted from the local newspaper (Middlebury Register). They also have some records taken from the records of the Congregational Church. Other than this they mainly have papers, journals, and photos that have been donated to their collection- the collection is not real extensive (nothing like the Vermont Historical Society in Barre)- but good if you have family from Middlebury and some of the surrounding towns. Across the street, the Isley Library has a good collection of books of area history and other items- they have a few cemetery records for Middlebury, I think mainly for Revolutionary soldiers- perhaps more.
