Smith is suffering with a large carbuncle on the back of his neck. Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Barber of Port Henry were Sunday visitors at Howard Stone's. Thad Smith of Saranac was a guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Smith, recently. Mrs. Geo. Payne and son Howard were in Boston last week. Source, Ticonderoga Sentinel--Thur.Aug. 18, 1921. SHOREHAM, VT. Mrs.Jane Farnsworth, the oldest resident in town, passed away at her home early Thursday morning, following an illness of only a few days. The funeral was held at her late residence Saturday afternoon and the burial was in the family lot at East Shoreham cemetery. Mrs. Farnsworth, a native of New York, was born in October 1828, and retained the full use of all her faculties to the close of her long life of almost 94 years. She is survived by a grandson, Earl Sunderland, four great grandchildren and very many friends, who will also miss her cheerful presence. Mr.(sic) Farnsworth outlived the three children, who had reached manhood and womanhood. In 1894 a double funeral was held at their home for the remaining son, Earl and only daughter, Mrs. Cora Sunderland. The son was buried at E. Shoreham and the daughter in Crown Point cemetery. Fiske at Crown Point Center. Vincent Montbriand, who is employed at A. L. LaBier's spent the week end at his home in Ticonderoga. The Misses Finch and Kerley spent Friday night with Mrs. A. L. LaBier, enroute from the summer school on Bread Loaf Mt. to their home in Ballston Spa. Vera Wartman accompanied her friend, Miss Ivanson, as far as Whitehall on her return trip to New York city. Leonard Lapham is spending some time in Plattsburg, a guest of his grandmother. The hay crop is very light in this section, farmers cutting about half of the usual crop. Transcribed by, Joan H. You don't give dates, but if this was in the period when Longfellow's poem Hiawatha was popular, the name of the heroine may have been the inspiration, just as people sometimes named their children things like Ulysses and even Cinderella (many examples of that in the census). In fact, the name Hiawatha also seems to have been pretty popular, judging by the number of examples in the census, right up through the twentieth century. Jessie was my Great Grandmother, married to Casper Will Adams. I have Bela (1), Zenas (Or Linus) (2), Samuel (3), Jessie (4). I believe Jessie had at least two siblings with the same name who died very young. Also looking for a Native American connection in the Adams line. Casper had a sister named Minnehaha ("Minnie"). She died at 13 of diphtheria, and is buried with her parents in Lakeview Cemetery in Addison. Why would anyone name a child Minnehaha unless there was is a Native American connection. I was able to obtain the issues for the years I was interested in through InterLibrary Loan, a service of my local county public library. It took awhile, and they were on microfilm, not digitized, but I found what I needed. And it cost me nothing extra. I do not find him in any census after that but says in pension request he lived in Pubelo, Co. where he married a Elizabeth Hall 1888, and then moved on to WA. I never find him in Ferry Co. nor Snohomish Co. with wife Elizabeth but I do find him in 1907 city directory. If anyone is researching this Civil War Vet would love to connect and share what I have. 1850 Ferrisburg, Addison Co., VT- Henry C. Hathorn (spelled Halborn) 1802/VT farmer, Abigman 1807/VT, Wm. W. 1833/VT, Francis 1836/VT, Rhoda A. 1839/VT, Henry F. 1841/VT, Mary A. 1842/VT. (these are parents & Siblings of Farwell H. Hathorn 1841/VT. 1850 Addison Co., VT H. N. Jones , Lucy , Martha E. , (this would be Martha Hathorn parents before she was with Farwell Hathorn in 1870. 1860 Shoreham, Addison Co. VT H. N. Jones 1807/VT farmer, Lucy 1805/VT, Martha E. 1845/VT, Horatio M. 1847/VT this is the Jones family with Martha E. 1845/VT before she went with Farwell Hathorn by 1870 1860 Bridgeport, Addison Co. VT H. C. Hathorn 1803, Abrina 1807, Wm. Wallace 1833, Henry F. 1840, Mary A. 1842. There is a Frances J. Wickwire 1837/SC that is working the farm with them. 10/31/1861 joined 1st VT CAV Co. K at Burlington, VT and gave his residence as Bridgeport, VT. He was discharged 12/31/1863 at Shevensburg, VA as a Sergant. Farwell requested pension from this service in 1900 from Republic, Ferry Co. WA. Farwell H. Hathorn also entered the Navy serving on the Alleghany 6/10/1864 from the Army; on the Potomaka 6/12/1865, on the Princeton to 6/15/1865 and was discharge from the Calypso 8/15/1865 according to the US Navy Dept dated 2/28/1895. 1870 census shows first child of Farwell & Martha was born 1869 and she is showing in 1870 as age 1! 1870 Orwell, Addison Co., VT I have Farwell Hathorn age 30/VT farmer, Martha 25/VT and child Lucy 1869/VT he is noted a farmer. There is no mention of a wife Martha or children Lucy 1869/VT, Fred F. 1873/VT, Ella 1876/VT, Joseph P. 6/1879/VT 1880 Trego Co., KS F. H. Hawthorn 1840/VT age 40 shows no occupation just living alone? 1880 Shoreham, Addison Co. VT. Martha Hathorn is living with her parents and Siblings Nelson Jones 1807, Lucy 1805, Miner 1847, with her children Lucy 1869 noted as granddaughter, Fred F. 1873 noted as grandson, Ella 1876 noted as granddaughter and Joseph P. born 6/1879. (which matches Farwell being one to KS) Farwell Hathorn says he married Eliza J. Hall 10/1/1888 at Pueblo, CO but he says no record exists. Nor does he say he was married before. Farwell Hathorn requested pension from Republic, Ferry Co. 6/9/1900 but I cannot find him or his new wife Eliza Hathorn in any census. By 1907 he made a statement to the pension board from Marysville, Snohomish Co. WA . 1900 I cannot find Farwell or Eliza in any census in WA 1907 Farwell H. Hawthorn is noted in Everett city directory living at 1422 Rucker Ave. it does not say he has a wife. 1900 Martha E. Hathorn 2/1842/VT said she is DIVORCED had 2 ch 2 liv., Jonas P. (should be Joseph) 1880/VT single, Ella M. Waite 8/1875 married 1 ch 1 liv (not mention of child) married to Plin W. Waite 12/1869/VT noted as son in law to Martha. I do not know when Martha E. died she is not found in census after 1900. Farwell H. Hawthorne (should be Hathorn) died 7/28/1908 and Elizabeth was informant and lot owner saying he lived at 1422 Rucker Ave at his death so she was obviously living with him as her address is the same. There is no obit just a thank you from Mrs. Elizabeth Hawthorn for G.A.R. participation. (Farwell was buried at Evergreen Cem under Fred Hawthorne and his tombstone & Military spell it Hathorn.) There is Bristol, Vermont ( Brown & McClay funeral home there,), I am not sure if there is another in that area? Also, there are a couple cemeterys there.
