Ira Bentley for me. I want to thank-you for the information. If anyone else is interested in researching a Methodist pastor this would be the place to contact. This was on the form they emailed me: "The Archives contain as index to pastors names, dates of service and obituaries. Holdings include the record of some closed and merged churches, and a set of Minutes of Annual Conference for Troy Annual Conference (1832 - present) and Vermont Annual Conference (1845 - 1940). There is no index to the names of members of individual churches which may appear in records we hold." Their fee is 20$ an hr. and they require the first 20$ up front. They are also very limited on the time they have to research each week. Jody

I'm aware of the very itinerent nature of the many ministers in the time period. I appreciate this as my 3rd greatgrandfather The Rev. Retire Mitchell and my 2rd greatgrandfather The Rev. H. H. Hartwell both of NH served all over the place. Often no more than 1 year in any place. Why is Rev. Sawyer referred to as "Elder"? I know that Rev. Mitchell served as a coroner between settled terms, do you know of other work that Rev. Sawyer might have been involved with in the interim between his service? You refer to Henry Crocker, History of the Baptists in Vermont (1913) as a source. Is there a source on deaths and burials? I have no record of the death of my greatgrandfather save a notice in a Middlebury newspaper stating that he died in Orwell. The Town records have nothing. Thank you again
I checked a book I have for Vermont Congregational Churches, 1762-1942. This is a list of all the churches in the state with their ministers and when they served. Whiting says at the beginning of their write-up that the church disappeared from Minutes, 1861, to reappear 1871. But Joseph W. Sawyer, Bapt., seems to have served from 1821 to 1829. So I'm wondering if he served again. Hope this helps. He was a Baptist minister as am I, and personal records aren't often preserved. The official record, of course, is recorded in the town where the wedding took place or from which a license was issued. He served the following churches in VT: South Fairfield 1814, East Hubbardton 1815-27, Whiting 1823-25, Shaftsbury 1839-44, Orwell 1854 and Brandon. Henry Crocker, History of the Baptists in Vermont (1913) doesn't list him as a Whiting pastor but does have I. W. Sawyer listed which may be a typo. There was an Isaac Sawyer but he wasn't in Whiting and I've never seen his middle initial so I. W. very likely is J. W.

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Harriet DAMON RUSSELL which was taken at the Central Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's with Harriet likely in her teens at the time. I've also recovered two photographs of what I believe is her son, Dustin S. RUSSELL. One photograph was taken in Middlebury, VT when he was only 4 months old in 1886, and the other taken at age 18 months in Manchester, NH. Based on limited research I believe this may be a photograph of Harriet Amanda DAMON b. 29 May 1861 in Ripton, VT to parents Reuben DAMON and Dolly A. LOVETT. The family was living in Middlebury, VT during the 1870 census with records providing the following information: Ruben DAMON, age 47, a Farm Laborer, born VT Dolly A. DAMON, age 39, Keeping House, born VT Lucy S. DAMON, age 13, at Home, born VT Harriet A. DAMON, age 9, born VT The family was still living in Middlebury, VT during the 1880 census with records providing the following information: Ruben A. DAMON, age 57, born VT, Day Lab, parents born MA Dolly A. DAMON, wife, age 42, born VT, Keep House, parents born VT/MA Harriet RUSSELL, dau, age 19, born VT, Farmer Clarence RUSSELL, son-in-law, age 22, born VT, Boarding, parents born VT/MA Rebecca LOVETT, mother-in-law, age 76, born MA, parents born VT In 1900 Clarence & Harriet RUSSELL are living in Middlebury, VT with her Mother and census records indicate the following: Clarence RUSSELL, age 42, born Oct 1857, married 21 years, born VT, parents born VT/MA, a Farmer Harriet E. RUSSELL, wife, age 39, born May 1861, married 21 years, 3 children/3 living, born VT, parents born VT Dustin S. RUSSELL, son, age 14, born Dec 1885, born VT, at School Albert RUSSELL, son, age 5, born Mar 1895, born VT Ruth E. RUSSELL, dau, age 3, born Aug 1897, born VT Dolley DAMON, Mother-in-law, age 61, born Aug 1838, a widow after 30 years of marriage, 1 child/1 living, born VT, parents born VT Still in Middlebury, VT during the 1910 census, records provide the following information: Clarence RUSSEL, age 52, married 30 years, born VT, parents born MA, a Farmer Hattie D. RUSSEL, wife, age 48, married 30 years, 3 children/3 living, born VT, parents born MA/VT Albert RUSSEL, son, age 15, born VT Ruth RUSSEL, dau, age 12, born VT Dolly A. DAMON, Mother-in-law, age 72, a widow, 1 child/1 living, born VT, parents born MA/VT And then in 1920, living in Middlebury, VT with all the children out of the household, census records provide this information: Clarence E. RUSSELL, age 62, born VT, parents born VT/MA, a Farmer Harriett A. RUSSELL, wife, age 58, born VT, parents born MA/VT Dollie A. DAMON, Mother-in-law, age 83, widow, born VT, parents born VT I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
