I think chapter XVII gives some history of churches in Addison County. Maybe I have the chapter wrong, but I know there is some information available there. Don
I was in Addison County the last week of July researching my NOYES and ESTUS lines in Salisbury and Leicester, and my SOPER and FRANK lines in Lincoln and Ripton. I went to each of the Town Clerks Offices and found the Clerks most accomodating. They all were very friendly and helped any time I got stuck on something I did not understand or if I needed another record to view. This was a great experience for me and I am very glad that I visited these places before going to the Vital Records Department in Middlesex. If you are not sure about the town(s) where your family lived, check the census records. That is how I learned where my ancestors lived in Addison County. Middlesex IS supposed to have copies on microfilm of ALL the town records. I believe they do, and more. In fact, they have so much that I was glad to have been able to narrow the field at the Town Clerks Offices! The State Vital Records Dept has old records grouped into 1760-1870 and 1871-1908. Most of the records in the town offices are kept in ledger-type books. I had copied all I knew were my family there and when I got to Middlesex, I looked up the "Certificates" I wanted and made copies of them. On one entry, I found conflicting information...I haven't figured that one out yet. The certificates are $3.00 each [stamped "for information only"] or around $9.00 for a certified copy. Again, the staff was most helpful. There were some records that I could not find. I am looking forward to going back to Vermont someday, when I can spend more time, and continue my searches! I highly recommend visiting both the Town Clerks and the Vital Records Dept.! And, YES!, Vermont is beautiful...everywhere! Makes me wonder how we got so scattered! _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8: Get 6 months for $9.95/month. http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/dialup
Records in VT are generally kept at the "town" level--in many states this is the same as township. Each county is subdivided into "Towns" and marriage, birth, death, and land records are kept at these offices. So you need to find out what "town"-ship they were in and most maps do not show this. Calling the courthouse of the county might help. And don't forget it is only a few miles to the next town!! Unfortunately, most births and deaths were not recorded in this period. They were pretty good about recording marriages (if theJP or minister remembered to record it!), Probate records are kept at the county level, but land records are kept at the town level. Supposedly, copies of the marriage, birth, and death records are located in a state office. As one town clerk told me recently, "They are SUPPOSED to have everything we have." This is the address and phone number given me: Division of Public Records, US Route 2-Middlesex, Drawer 33, Montpelier, VT 05633 Phone: 808.828.3286 I have not tried to contact them as yet. If you do, let me know what kind of assistance available. Good luck!! Vermont is beautiful and the people are very nice, but chasing down records is VERY frustrating. If you have any knowledge of where records are kept from the time period of 1801 to > 1829 please forward same to me. Thank you for your consideration.
I am attempting to research the JOSEPH JACKSON family who moved to Starksboro, VT in 1801 with wife LYDEA [Greenleaf/Greenlief] JACKSON, children :Benjaman, William, Greenleaff, Samuel and Daniel. This family is shown in the 1810 Census. If you can help me in any way to trace this family please contact me. If you have any knowledge of where records are kept from the time period of 1801 to 1829 please forward same to me. Thank you for your consideration. Marilyn Miller
Thank you all very much for your suggestions and leads. Happy searching! William "Bill" Barff
I'm interested in the Williams line...what are the chances! <VBG> Mine were around Bridport ca 1800...a bit earlier. The oldest one I know is Joseph Williams who m. Molly Gray in Bridport in 1789. He had nine children. If the time period looks good, let me know... Here's hoping! I have a snapshot of Don Sears probably taken in the 40's or 50's and a formal photograph of a Fannie F.Sears taken in 1905. These were with photographs of Mable (Hier) and Elliot Miller who I am researching. My husband's elderly aunt says that Don Sears was a minister in or around Addison, VT. She is not sure of Fannie Sears. I do not need those photos, but hate to throw them out. If someone is interested in this family, I would be glad to send them to you. Pat Marshall [email protected]
