Bixby Article Title: Rutland Daily Herald Article Date: September 21 1950 Article Description: Lt.Pierce's Body To Arrive In Middlebury. Article Text: MIDDLEBURY, Vt. Sept. 20--The body of Lt. Robert E. Pierce, son of Mr.and Mrs. Fred Pierce, who was killed in action October 4, 1943, will arrive in Middlebury tomorrow. The funeral will be held in the Congregational church Saturday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Walker T. Hawley will officiate. Burial will be in Prospect cemetery in East Middlebury. Lt. Pierce, a bombardier on the Flying Fortress, enlisted in the Army Air corps before his graduation from Middlebury college in 1942. He was called to active duty in August of that year. On March 11, 1943, he was graduated as a distinguished bombardier and commissioned a second lieutenant. He sailed for England in August and participated in several raids before October when his ship failed to return from a raid over Frankfurt, Germany. His body was buried in Gross Karben, Germany, and later transferred to the U.S. Military cemetery in St. Avold, France. In 1942 he married Shelley Winslow, now Mrs. Paul Travsky of Miami, Fla.
