Source, Rutland Vt.Daily Herald--Sat.June 26, 1915. RUTLAND, Vt. WOMAN DRINKS IODINE BUT WILL LIVE. Mrs. Frank Martin Takes the Poison in Dark, Husband says by Mistake. Either in an attempt at suicide or by mistake, Mrs. Frank Martin of No. 75 Travers place drank the greater part of an ounce of iodine at 10:45 o'clock last night and but for the prompt action of neighbors and Dr. W. G. Hodsdon, who was summoned by Mr. Martin, the result might have been fatal. Mrs. Martin was given an emetic and it is supposed a majority of the poison was expelled from her stomach. Mr. Martin, a mason by trade, claimed last night the entire affair was an accident. MR. MARTIN SAYS IT WAS MISTAKE. According to Mr. Martin, his wife, who is about 30 years, has been having trouble with her teeth and last night in the dark she went to the cupboard containing several bottles of medicine and supposed she reached for a small bottle of Sloan's liniment and this she tipped into her mouth, expecting to rub some of the fluid on her gums. He says Mrs. Martin swallowed some of the poison by mistake. STATEMENTS CONFLICT . But little is known of Mr. and Mrs. Martin. The people living in the house said he was a carpenter, who had been working every day since he had resided on the street, about four weeks. Mr. Martin says he is a stone mason and has not worked since he came to this city from Troy, N.Y., four weeks ago. MRS. LORETTE'S STATEMENT. Mrs. Lorette, who owns the house and lives down stairs, said last night she never would have rented the house to Mr.and Mrs. Martin had she known the woman's violent temper, but she refused to make any statement concerning the affair on the second floor. Dr. Hodsdon refused last night to discuss the case beyond admitting he had received such a call.
