Source, Rutland Vt.Herald--Mon.Oct.22,1917. RUTLAND, Vt. DESERTER GLEASON COMMITS SUICIDE Rutland ,Vt. Soldier Shoots Himself at Railroad Station in Bellow Falls, Vt. William H. Gleason, son of Mr. and Mrs.Fred A. Gleason of No. 60 North street, Rutland, Vt., a deserter from Camp Bartlett, Westfield, Mass., shot and killed himself instantly at the railroad station in Bellows Falls, Vt., Saturday morning at 5 o'clock.The bullet entered the body in the upper abdomen. The body was brought to this city Saturday night on the evening train and taken to the father's home on North street. Young Gleason was a member of company H,first vermont infantry, and while stationed at Fort Ethan Allen gave the officers there trouble on two occasions because he overstayed his leave of absence. At one time he was traced by the Rutland police to Worcester, Mass., where he was found by government officials. Later,while the troops were stationed at Fort Ethan Allen and just previous to their leaving for another encampment, young Gleason,who was 21 years old, was arrested on Curtis avenue in this city where he was staying with a woman friend. About 10 days ago Gleason was granted another leave of absence from the camp at Westfield and several days ago the police received word here that he had overstayed his leave again and was wanted by the military authorities. Since the receipt of this telegram Gleason kept in hiding. SENT BACK TO CAMP BY FATHER. On Friday the newspapers were informed that Gleason was wanted and as a consequence he was placed on the "sleeper" Saturday morning by his father, who purchased a ticket for him back to Westfield, this bring the second time his parents had tried to have him return to camp. Gleason, left the train at Bellows Falls and after standing about the platform for an hour, walked over to the baggage room door and shot himself. He had been carrying the revolver loaded while in this city, a gun which he purchased in Rutland. Gleason was in Springfield, Vt. at the outbreak of the Mexican trouble and he enlisted in the company of that town at the time. He leaves besides his father and mother, three half brothers, J. P. Gleason of this city, E.H. Gleason of Rocester, N.Y., and F. J. Gleason of South Royalton, Vt. and a sister, Miss Cora A. Gleason of this city.
