Article: Middlebury Youth Drowned. Harold Cole, eleven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Cole of Middlebury was drowned on Monday afternoon in Otter creek and at the side which is known as "big eddy", situated just below the plant of the Vermont Marble company. The young fellow had left home soon after dinner with a playmate, and both of them passed trough the business section of the town on their way to the river bank, where they often played with a number of other children. Young Cole and his playmate, were on one side of the river near "big eddy", and the other youngsters were on the opposite side. Tierney went in search of a boat so as to row across the river to his playmates. While Tierney, his playmate, was looking for a boat Cole evidently fell into the water, for in a few minutes he saw what must have been Cole's arm sinking beneath the water, and unable to render him assistance the boys watched him go under. Tierney, who was overcome by fear and grief of the mishap did not mention anything about it until he was questioned by the chief of police about three hours later. Immediately after finding out the mishap, men began dragging the river in hopes of recovering the child's body. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
