Bixby Article Title: Rutland Daily Herald Article Date: March 13 1918 Article Description: Obituary of John Crowley. Article Text: Civil War Veteran Passes Away at Home on Plain st. John P.Crowley of Plain street, a resident of Rutland for nearly his life-time and a Civil War veteran, died yesterday morning at 2:15 o'clock at his home after an illness of about three weeks. Mr.Crowley was past commander of Roberts post, G.A.R., and on his way home from post meeting November 8,1915, he fell and broke his left leg. The fracture failed to knit,and the following March it was found necessary to amputate the leg. Mr. Crowley was able to get about considerable, however, using an artificial leg.and had enjoyed fairly good health until recently when a general breaking down hastened the end. Mr.Crowley died on the 50th anniversary of his marriage to Miss Delia Cavanaugh of Rutland, who lived until 25 years ago this month. Mr. Crowley served in the Civil War with company A, 13th Vermont volunteer infantry, and was with the 2d Vermont brigade at the Battle of Gettysburg. He enlisted August 26, 1862, and was mustered out October 21, 1863. Born in Ireland, February 3, 1843,Mr.Crowley came to Rutland at the age of five years. He was employed as section foreman for the Rutland railroad and also by the How Scale company.Mr.Crowley was a member of St.Peter's Hibernian Benevolent union. The survivors are five daughters, Miss M. Kittie Crowley, Mrs. Nellie C.Crowley, Miss Nora E. Crowley, Mrs. Milton Thompson and Miss Agnes B. Crowley , all of Rutland; a son,James J.Crowley of Boston, and two half sisters, Mrs.Nora Leary of Brockton, Mass.,and Miss Mary Kelleher of Rutland.
