Editor Herald : A melancholy death occurred in the town of Ira on Sabbath eve, the 29th inst. The circumstances attending the death are these : It appears that Mrs. Margaret Mumford went, on Sabbath afternoon in company with her husband, to visit a friend some two miles distant from her home. About eight o'clock in the evening they started on their return, and when about half way, called at a neighbor's where Mr. Mumford obtained some cider, which, with what he had previously taken, rendered him unfit to manage his horses home. Soon after they had started from the last mentioned neighbor's the horses became unmanageable, and when imbedded in a deep snow drift, one of them fell, breaking the pole of the sleigh, freeing the horses from it, Mr. Mumford forgetful on account of his condition of the presence of his wife, left her in the sleigh, and was afterwards found by a little girl in trouble with his horse. She assisted him home, where he lay in an insensible state until morning. The deceased being left alone without team to convey her home, undertook the fatal journe! y alone. It seems she traveled several rods with seeming regularity until she came to a ravine filled with snow and water, into which she fell. Extricating herself from this place, and seemingly weakened by the efforts, she walked upon her hands and knees, and crawling as best she could towards home, until exhausted she lay down in the cold and cheerless path, unwatched by friends, and died. She was of Irish parentage but for many years has resided in this vicinity. An inquest was held under the direction of J. E. Maney, Esq., and the Jury rendered a verdict of "death from exposure and exhaustion." Mrs. Mumford, it seems, had been ill for some time ; and on this evening seemed unusually so. She was found in the morning by her husband and two of her neighbors. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ VT-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
