Source, Rutland Vt.Herald--Thur.May 12,1927. COUNTY COURT WILL TRY ALLEGED GHOULS. Bernard Fassett and John Gleason Are Bound Over By City Judge Kinney. The cases of Bernard Fassett of this city (Rutland) and John Gleason of Hydeville, Vt., who are charged with desecration of a grave in Evergreen cemetery, will be threshed out in Rutland County court. Both men were bound over to the County body yesterday under bail of $ 500 after a preliminary hearing before City Judge Clayton H. Kinney.Gleason furnished surety for his release but Fassett, who is a probationer, probably will be locked up until his case is called. The state called only three witnesses at the hearing, which was conducted by State's Attorney Lawrence C. Jones. Jack A. Crowley being counsel for the respondents. Hollis I. Loveland, superintendent of the cemetery testified that he had discharged Gleason the day previous to the alleged offense. Frank Shedd, who lives near the burial lot, told of finding the two respondents digging in the cemetery late at night when he went there to ascertain the source of noise which attracted his attention. A man who accompanied Shedd also testified and it was shown that the two had some words with the so-called ghouls. No defense was introduced but it was inferred from questions asked by counsel for the respondents that it will be claimed that no malice was shown in any acts that the men may have committed.
