Bixby Article Title: Rutland Weekly Herald Article Date: February 8 1864 Article Description: Civil War Chaplain. Article Text: QUARTERLY REPORT. Quarterly Report of Chaplain 4th Vt. Vol. Infantry, January 15th, 1864. The last quarter has been one of mingled interests of hopes, and fears, in the field, on the march, and in contact with the enemy. The officers have however, in every instance, as on former occasions. exhibited bravery in danger, commensurate with the high confidence reposed in them ;the discipline of the men has been strictly moral, inflicting punishment to check thefts, and other crime, though not severe. There has been a marked improvement in the habits of officers in command, as to drinking intoxicating liquors and profanity; a respect has been paid to religious instruction, and in some instances of losses and affliction substantial aid rendered by them. The Chaplain is happy to acknowledge as a token of their regards the receipt of $136 cash, and their hearty co-operation in his work among the soldiers. There has been a greater amount of sickness and death among the soldiers than in any former quarter since our connection with the regiment. The officers in charge have exerted themselves to make the Hospital comfortable, giving particular attention to the selection of nurses, cleanliness of Hospital and beds, and having ready supplies for the wants of the sick. Our respect has been shown the deceased in the religious and military honors performed at their burial. The soldiers quarters, and equipage (sic) have been duly inspected, and it is found that they are contributing to their own personal interests by observing the rules enjoined while in quarters. They also exhibit respect for, and contribute by precepts, and example, to the moral and religious interests of the regiment, attending public worship;all of which,I have the honor respectfully to submit to the officer commanding the 4th Vermont Volunteers, near Brandy Station, Va.
