Bixby Article Title: The Poultney Journal Article Date: September 4 1931 Article Description: Obituary of Burt Wilder. Article Text: Tinmouth Man Killed By Fall. Burt G. Wilder, 62,of Tinmouth, Vt. was instantly killed Monday when the standards broke on a hay wagon he was driving and he fell beneath the horses' hoofs. He was decending the hill near Chipman Lake when the accident occurred. Wilder was born in Wallingford but had been a resident of Danby and Tinmouth for the past 10 years. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. George Holden, Wallingford, Mrs. Clarence Eddy, North Clarendon and Mrs.F.E.Farnsworth of Worcester and three brother, William of Northfield, Odell of Tinmouth and Montie Wilder of Rutland. Mrs. Milo Drake died on Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sumner Payne of North Poultney. She was born on February 16, 1857.On December 11, 1870, she was married to William Carter, whose death occurred in 1879. She was afterwards married to Milo Drake, who died about four years ago. Deceased is survived by four sons, Walter Carter, of Crown Point, N.Y., K.L.Carter of this village, George Drake of Mineville, N.Y., and Archie Drake of this village; also by one daughter, Mrs. George Burbank of Crown Point, N.Y., and a sister, Mrs. Bryon Carter of Ballaston Springs, N.Y., and by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the home of her son, K.L. Carter, Rev. F. W. Ford officiating. The Baptist choir sang, "Rock of Ages" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." The bearers were Ralph Pray, David Deyette, David Roberts and Warren Edminister. Article Text: Rutland Officer Dies While Guiding Traffic On Sunday evening Special Police Officer Charles Edmund LeClair, age 69, of Rutland, died suddenly while directing the band concert traffic. He fell unconscious and died almost instantly of cerebral hemorrhage. He was rushed to Gleason's garage on West street, in hope that he might be saved,and died before medical attention could be given him. The traffic had been particularly heavy during the evening on West street and also on Nichols street,where LeClair was directing traffic. The officer revived for about a second, then died, and his body was removed to the Clifford undertaking rooms, after the police headquarters had been notified. Deceased was a painter by trade, but had served as a member of the police force on special occasions, and was at one time employed on the Rutland railroad. Lyle Needham of the Underhill C.C.C. Camp spent the week-end with his mother, Mrs. Charles Hitchcock. Schools of the town were closed Monday for the observance of Lincoln's Birthday. Mrs. Henry Forgues has returned from the Bishop DeGoesbriand hospital where she has been recovering from an operation. Miss Edith Needham is receiving treatment at the Mary Fletcher hospital in Burlington. Miss Blanche Belanger was a visitor in Burlington Saturday. On display at the Orwell Free Library is a set of pictures taken in August of the pageant presented at the 150 anniversary of the First Congregational Church. An interesting collection of about 50 photographs of Orwell residents and places taken several years ago has given to the library by Capt. George B. Wright. Mrs. J. A. Gregory had charge of special Lincoln program at the Church school session Sunday morning a the Congregational Church. The rooms were decorated with flags and bunting. Special music, scripture, prayer and readings were given by members. Mrs. Milo Lilly entertained the members of of the Busy Housewives at an all day meeting Wednesday, Feb. 14. Mrs. Ruth Ringey of the Home Economic Extension Work was present and gave a demonstration of a Fish and Vegetable Pie. Lessons were given in cutting garments and finishing seams. Mrs. Glenn Armstrong was recently confined to her bed with the grip. Mrs. K. W. Myrick and children spent Monday in Cornwall at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stevens. Miss Lillian Myrick has returned to her home from the Porter hospital where she underwent an operation for appendicitis. Judge Allen Sturtevant of Middlebury was a visitor of Mr. and Mrs. C.J.S. Hamilton recently. Mr. and Mrs. John Witherell of Middlebury were of visitors of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Witherell Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Harold St. John and children of White River Jct. were recent guests of Mrs. Ida Briggs. Miss Edia Sollace spent the week-end with her friend, Thelma Morris, of Weybridge. Mrs. Winnie Pratt, a former resident of Bridport, who has made her home in Theresa, N.Y., is a guest of her sister, Mrs. H.T. Palmer of Middlebury. Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Stone and son Roger, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Adams of Westport Sunday. Mrs. W. A. Walker recently spent a few days with her brother, Richard Booth in Vergennes. Robert Rowland Williams, a native of Festiniog, North Wales, where he was born on October 12, 1844, but for thirty- five years a resident of Poultney, died at his home on Church street on Monday, after an illness of seven weeks. He was the son of Rowland and Elizabeth Edwards Williams, and after coming to America lived in New Jersey, in Hydeville, then in Granville, and afterwards in Blissville. He is the last of the family of four brothers, the pioneers in the slate industry of New York state and Vermont.His interests in the manufacture of slate continued until about twelve years ago, when he retired. On March 22, 1866, he married Margaret Davies, who survives him, together with one son, John Davies Williams, proprietor of the Poultney Granite Works,and one daughter,Miss Elizabeth Augusta Williams, professor of biology in Converse College, Spartansburg, S. C.; also one grandson, Robert Edward Williams ,of this village. Deceased had been in poor health for some time, but had been about as usual until seven weeks ago, when his condition became critical, and a shock hastened the end. He was a member of Lee Lodge of F. & A. M., of Castleton. The funeral was held from his late home this Thursday afternoon, Rev. John W. Morris of Granville officiating.
