Article: Twelve cows belonging to David Dickinson of the East Proctor road were killed and another so badly injured that it had to be short, when a Rutland railroad train southbound plowed its way through a herd of more than 40 animals at a private crossing near Center Rutland. The accident was due to the storm, the falling rain obscuring the vision of the farm hand who was driving the cattle and the locomotive crew. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article: RUTLAND, VT. Fire Department Gets Three Calls During Week-End. Boiling Tar, Stopped Chimneys and Blazing Auto Radiator Alcohol Are Causes. The firemen answered three calls over the week-end. Smoke, issuing from a pot of boiling tar and from a clogged chimney, were responsible for two of them, while the other resulted from the ignition of alcohol beneath the hood of an automobile. The anti-freeze solution which had boiled out of a radiator of an automobile and flared up when it came in contact with the engine block was the origin of the first summons at 7:30 o'clock Saturday morning to the corner of Strongs avenue and Wales street. The inflammable liquid burned itself out, doing no damage, according to firemen, who said that the car is owned by Charles J. Dansreau of Franklin street. The second trip was to 79 North street at 2:15 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The firefighters were called by neighbors of Irving H. Baker, who became alarmed when they noticed a cloud of black smoke rolling out of the open door in a shed at the rear of the residence. Investigation disclosed that tar, to be used in repairing the roof of the structure, was the source of the dense smoke. It being heated in a container atop a small stove. A maladjusted damper in a chimney at the home of Robert C. Boynton on Grove street, which caused smoke to pour into the house through the fireplace opening, resulted in a call being made to the fire station early last night. The men corrected the position of the damper, allowing the smoke to resume its normal course through the flue. Little damage was done. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! To The Editor of the Rutland Herald. Hon. James M. Slade gave a most splendid supper (at his residency) to the officers and soldiers of Company B. 5th Vt. Regiment. So noble an act would seem to demand a frank acknowledgment through the public journals of our State. Shortly after supper the recipients tendered to Mr. Slade their grateful acknowledgments for his benevolence, kind hospitality, and honor he had done them, to which Mr. Slade responded, first by reading Mrs. Dorr's Prize Poem, and closed by making a neat speech, (he knows so well how to do,) paying a most beautiful tribute to the Vermont soldiers. After listening to numerous patriotic songs and other music , discoursed by the ladies present, the company retired at a early hour, highly gratified with the evening's entertainment. N.
