Article date: July 31 1925 Article description: East Poultney Woman Fleeced of $30,000. Article: East Poultney Woman Fleeced of $30,000 Miss Isabelle Ruggles, aged 75 years, and a former East Poultney woman has been fleeced of $30,000 according to papers which have been filed in Glens Falls, N.Y. Miss Ruggles suffering from faulty circulation went to Glens Falls in 1921 for treatment from Dr. Amarandos. While she was receiving treatment from him he obtained several loans through fraud, she states, after he had found out that she had securities worth $30,000. She claims that she loaned him $500 to complete the payments on his home, but did not receive a mortgage which he promised her, and also loaned him money to make repairs to the house, following a fire there. The money was to be repaid when he received the insurance, but which he failed to do. Money was also lent him to purchase an electric equipment and also to buy the home where he lived, and he agreed to give a mortgage on all his properly to cover it, but thus failed to do so. On January 1, 1922, he gave her his unsecured note for $14,000 to cover these loans, she states, and in 1923 and 1924 he made other loans amounting to $16,000. Amarandos paid her $388 on notes in 1922 and $895 in 1923. He has been sending her $10 per week lately. She also says that he promised to keep his life insurance to cover the notes, ad that after taking out the policies he allowed them to lapse. Amarandos has left Glens Falls and on July 11th it appeared in the papers that he was going to Burlington to practice medical massage, and if he failed there he would return to Glens Falls to resume practice. All Miss Ruggles has left now is her home East Poultney which she values at $1500. The Glens Falls police are searching for Dr.Amarandos while detectives in another section of the state are preparing to serve papers on him. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
