    2. Source, Rutland Vt.Herald--Mon.Oct.22,1917. RUTLAND, Vt. DESERTER GLEASON COMMITS SUICIDE Rutland ,Vt. Soldier Shoots Himself at Railroad Station in Bellow Falls, Vt. William H. Gleason, son of Mr. and Mrs.Fred A. Gleason of No. 60 North street, Rutland, Vt., a deserter from Camp Bartlett, Westfield, Mass., shot and killed himself instantly at the railroad station in Bellows Falls, Vt., Saturday morning at 5 o'clock.The bullet entered the body in the upper abdomen. The body was brought to this city Saturday night on the evening train and taken to the father's home on North street. Young Gleason was a member of company H,first vermont infantry, and while stationed at Fort Ethan Allen gave the officers there trouble on two occasions because he overstayed his leave of absence. At one time he was traced by the Rutland police to Worcester, Mass., where he was found by government officials. Later,while the troops were stationed at Fort Ethan Allen and just previous to their leaving for another encampment, young Gleason,who was 21 years old, was arrested on Curtis avenue in this city where he was staying with a woman friend. About 10 days ago Gleason was granted another leave of absence from the camp at Westfield and several days ago the police received word here that he had overstayed his leave again and was wanted by the military authorities. Since the receipt of this telegram Gleason kept in hiding. SENT BACK TO CAMP BY FATHER. On Friday the newspapers were informed that Gleason was wanted and as a consequence he was placed on the "sleeper" Saturday morning by his father, who purchased a ticket for him back to Westfield, this bring the second time his parents had tried to have him return to camp. Gleason, left the train at Bellows Falls and after standing about the platform for an hour, walked over to the baggage room door and shot himself. He had been carrying the revolver loaded while in this city, a gun which he purchased in Rutland. Gleason was in Springfield, Vt. at the outbreak of the Mexican trouble and he enlisted in the company of that town at the time. He leaves besides his father and mother, three half brothers, J. P. Gleason of this city, E.H. Gleason of Rocester, N.Y., and F. J. Gleason of South Royalton, Vt. and a sister, Miss Cora A. Gleason of this city.

Mrs. Dwight Palmer and daughter, Charlotte, and son, Girth, passed the week-end in Rutland at the home of Mrs. Bert Powell. Mrs. Guy F. Wood entertained the "Club" at her home on South street Monday evening. Whist was played after which refreshments were served and prizes were awarded to Mrs. George D. Carter and Mrs. Fred Goodspeed.

She is survived by her husband and two sons, John and Caradoc of South Poultney, Vt., and one daughter, Mrs. Eliza Hughes of Utica, N.Y., and one brother, C. Jones of Fair Haven, Vt. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the South Poultney, Vt. Welsh church at 1 o'clock and burial was in Fair Haven, Vt., in Cedar Grove cemetery. The bearers were M. P. Williams, E. Griffiths, W. Owens, W. J. Pricthard, R. Lloyd and O. P. Jones. Rev. Mr. Morris of South Poultney officiated.

Cook and James F. Cook of Shoreham. Mrs. Brown was born on Shoreham, Vt., January 29, 1848, and was the daughter of William and Nancy (Pond) Cook. Funeral services will be held at her late home September 24, at 2 o'clock with burial in East Shoreham, Vt.

A musical program will be carried out and refreshments will be served. FUNERAL of SALEM WINCHELL. Funeral services for Salem Winchell, who died Monday morning, were conducted at his late home yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. Burton E. Marsh,pastor of the United church, and were largely attended. The bearers were Harry Wedin, Carl Wedin, John Harrison, Arthur Anderson,Harold Anderson and Anthony Grazena. The numerous floral tributes included a wreath from the neighbors. The body was place in the vault at Evergreen cemetery, Rev. Mr. Marsh officiating at the committal service. TEACHERS ENTERTAINED. The teachers of the Main street school entertained the teachers of the Hill school at a salad supper Tuesday evening. Following the supper the evening was spent at bridge.

Smith of New York. The postponed meeting of Heber Allen chapter, D.A.R. ,will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Mrs. Helen P. Woodworth. The Ladies Aid society of the Methodist church will hold it regular meeting this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the church parlors. The February committee will serve refreshments. R. C. Brown and men are at work redecorating the interior of H.A. Matot's house. The Parish Aid society of Trinity church will meet Friday afternoon with Mrs. P. G. Ross. The east Poultney Parent-Teacher association will hold a special business meeting this evening. Mrs. Cora patterson of Rutland was a week-end guest of her daughter, Miss Ida Mills.

    2. Source,Rutland Vt.Herald--Fri.April 10,1908. HAVE BEEN MARRIED 64 YEARS. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Alford of Castleton Still Active. He is Running Farm and Milk Route at Age 87--She is 82 and Does Own Housework--Were Married at Castleton September 5, 1843--Have Lived There 70 Years. The statement to the effect that Mr. and Mrs. Horace G. Bateman of Pine street have probably been married longer than any other couple in the state, they celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary Wednesday, has brought a contradiction from Castleton. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Alford, who reside on South street in that town, have been married 64 years and they believe that they hold the state record. They were married by Rev. Joseph Steele, pastor of the Congregational church, September 5, 1843. Mr. Alford will be 88 years old in August and Mrs. Alford will be 83 in November. Seventy years ago the 7th of this month they came to Castleton and have passed the greater part part of the time since then in that town. They both enjoy good health, Mrs. Alford being able to do her own housework and Mr. Alford running a small farm and milk route, being seen on his daily rounds every morning during the winter.
