The info on Rootsweb.com is free; information on the LDS site familysearch.org is free. Check your local library and see if they subscribe to HeritageQuest/ProQuest. If so, the census records are available thru them with your library card. If they don't then find out if a library in a larger metropolitan area is a subscriber and get one of their library cards. Many libraries offer online access to HeritageQuest. Also, you have enough info now to order films from the LDS Family History Library at your local LDS Church. German records are very tidy. Germans were excellant record keepers. You can get the microfilm of those records sent from Salt Lake City to your local Family History Center (FHC) for a very modest charge - usually less than $5. You don't have to be a member of the LDS church, nor will they bug you to become one. Netzow (Nitzau, Nitzow) was a town in the state of Brandenburg, Germany and that is where Frank Witthuhn's obit says he was born. And according to the census above, Carl Klatt was born in Mecklinburg, Germany. Sharon

I can't afford to subscribe to some of the 'gen' sites, and have been trying to do this just using the 'Net. Naturally, I haven't been able to find very much. You just saved me hours upon hours (perhaps more!) of searching and pulling my hair out! You are an angel, and many blessings to you from the Witthuhns of Alabama. Sumarie

All I have in the Witthuhn line is Dorothy's father, Dennis Victor, Jr, son of Dennis Victor, Sr. and Dorothy Mae Ikard. Dennis, Sr. is the son of Victor Frank and Doris. If anyone has any information that they would like to share-I'm interested in tracing both names back as far as possible. If you prefer not to post publically, you may email me at spotdot34@yahoo.com. Please reference 'Witthuhn' in the subject line. Thanks!

I figured that the stuff from GD and the ship list would either add or clear up the issue. Too me, either helps. I'd like to share a breakthrough I had today. My ggrandfather was Heinrich Voth, came over with his grandparents and cousins Penner in 1874. They went on to Kansas apparently, but he stayed somewher "in Illinois with a Mr. Zehr" who Americanized his name to Henry Foote. When he "came of age" he went down to Kansas. I came upon this wonderful site: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp I was searching for Henry Foote in the 1880 census records with his birth date given from many sources. I finally took out the birth date and got this: Henry FOOTE Household Male -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Information: Birth Year <1865> Birthplace PRUSS Age 15 Occupation Laborer Marital Status S <Single> Race W <White> Head of Household Christian ZEHR Relation Other Father's Birthplace PRUSS Mother's Birthplace PRUSS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Census Place Deer Creek, Tazewell, Illinois Our family has NEVER known who this Mr. Zehr was, or where in Illinois Henry Foote stayed. Now we know all that, plus that he stayed there at least 6 years. Incidently, Henry's birthdate according to family records does not match the data from the ship list NOR this census. BUT, the ship list and census DO match.

I have Heinrich's date of birth from his father's journal. Has him b. 6 Jun 1867. His headstone in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City Iowa has 1867-1942. For the GD entry on him I don't know who made the assumption that he's the Heinrich from the Vaderland. Otherwise all the details are correct for my Heinrich/Henry. As for the Susanna you found, her birthdate matches my Susie perfectly. The birthdate I have is from my dec'd uncle's research. I don't believe he was aware of the GD as he passed away in 1980. So it would be a separate source and thus most likely the same person. It says that her grandfather would be a Benjamin Koehn just like my Helena's father was a Benjamin. But her 4 brothers were supposedly born between 1854-58 according to her insurance application and her mother would have been born abt 1818. So I don't think Andreas B. Koehn (Susie's father) would be Helena's brother. Thanks for all the search ideas! Kind regards Shanan

All the information from GD match what you have been saying, dates, infant deaths on the ship, etc. Whoever put the immigration info for Heinrch (the son) had to have got it from the family group I pasted from the ship list.. >Hence they started on one ship (which I've lost the name of that had a collision soon after embarking) and ended up on the quarantine ship. I do not know what ship they ended up getting to America on. I'd suggest searching the web with "russia small pox quarantine" or similar. I'm sure there are other families on the same ship who have put their history on the web. By searching with my family's ship, I was able to find other families with more information, such as who the captain was, that all of the mennonites on that particular ship were from one congregation, one village, and were with a certain Elder. I was also able to find where a majority of the congregation ended up. In my case, my ancestor didn't follow the rest of them to Moundridge, KS. One source regarding my exact group explains: "However, those who had been too poor in Russia to pay their own passage stayed with Mennonite families in Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana to work off travelling expenses which had been advanced to them" Also, there are many documents describing mennonite groups stopping in Illinois before going either towards South Dakota or down to Kansas. It is very likely that your family either (1) had to stay around Illinois instead of travelling further or (2) had relatives in Iowa who had already settled. >Abraham married Susie Koehn (his second wife) in 1897. You could also search on the web for other families who immigrated from Karolswalde, where your family most likely was last before immigrating, because their children were born there. This way, you might find how many groups immigrated, or if just one group, etc.

I've had several people in the past contact me regarding them in the G-Ma database. But I see that my family has been added as well. The birth dates for the children (Anna 1863, Heinrich 1867, Benjamin 1971 & Abraham 1973) all come from a handwritten journal that Andreas had started prior to immigration. Anna & Benjamin died of smallpox en-route. Hence they started on one ship (which I've lost the name of that had a collision soon after embarking) and ended up on the quarantine ship. I do not know what ship they ended up getting to America on. One question I have always had regarding this family is why they didn't settle in Kansas or South Dakota like the rest of the immigrants. They ended up in Sharon Twp, Johnson Co.,Iowa which was settled by Mennonites from Pennsylvania in the 1840's. I know that much of the financial help to migrate the Mennonites from Russia was from the Pennsylvanian Mennonites. I do know that only one son married another Mennonite, who most like was related to Helena as her name was Susie Koehn. I have a picture of her brother (no name on it) and it was taken in Moundridge, KS. I've always made the assumption that Andreas' father's name was Peter as Andreas' middle name was Pedersohn. Helena's father was Benjamin Koehn. From some insurance applications I know that Andrea's father died at the age of 50 prior to 1888 from an accident with his axe and that his mother is still living in 1888. As for Helena's parents, her father too had passed away prior to 1888 and her mother is still living in 1888 and would have been born in abt 1813. I have other details regarding their siblings but no names, from these applications. One interestingly is he had a brother who died at the age of 30 in a war. At some point after the 1880 census the name changed from Voth to Fout. And they moved away from the Mennonite settlement in southern Johnson Co. to being in Iowa City by 1895. In 1880 they are in Sharon twp, Johnson Co. Andreas is called Andrew and the name is spellt Vot. Heinrich is Henry and age 12, Abraham is 7. There are two more children Malinda and Eli. My great-grandmother Caroline will come along in 1884. Abraham married Susie Koehn (his second wife) in 1897. She was born 1872. I found a Susannah Kane in 1880 living in Wilson, Marion, Kansas age 8... perfect age. Don't know if it's her for sure though. Don't know if anyone can make heads or tails of all that :-)!

I met Charlie in 8th grade, he was vivacious, cute, and actually a little full of himself. He was such a funny guy, no matter what kind of mood I was in he could make me laugh. I was at school when I heard what happened, but I went home. The loss of Charlie has hit me in ways I couldn’t even imagine. I cried for days after, and I still do sometimes when I see pictures or something reminds me of him. In fact, I fight back tears as I write this. I miss Charlie so much. I miss the way he would call odd hours of the night just to “say whats up”, or drop by my work to give me a hard time, or tell me “its ok Ashley im here” when I was having a bad day. I miss him so much, just as many others do, too. I can only imagine what u are going through (peralta/voth). So, in closing, my heart goes out to you, because there is a place in it for my good friend Charlie, a! s long as I live and thereafter.
