Hi Lisa, When West Virginia became a state in 1862 the counties that formed the state at that time had previously been part of the larger state of Virginia. Therefore alot of the counties in the state of West Virginia were formed before the formation of the state. Greenbrier County was formed in 1778. Hope this helps. Vicky Subject: [VIRGINIA] HELP! Need date for VA County to WV HI Folks! I am in a state of confusion here! I printed out the VA and WV counties lists, including when formed, parent county, etc... I am trying to find out WHEN GREENBRIAR COUNTY WENT FROM VA TO WV!!! The VA list doesnt list Greenbriar at all, and the WV list states it was formed in 1778??? I find that odd, seeing as WV was not even a state until 1862. Why would the WVGENWEB site give 1778? I cannot enter my ancestors location without knowing when Greenbriar was VA or WV, for accuracy... Please help!
