    3. Tax lists for LAND go back to 1782 for each county or city, or whenever it was formed. The same goes for PERSONAL property tax lists. (Personal Property tax lists for the STATE level were suspended from 1808-1864). What remains of these lists is available at the Library of Virginia on microfilm, but a comprehensive list is not "on line." Some have been published here and there, and USGENWEB may a good source to find some of them. The ones for Culpeper and Madison counties, for example, are fairly intact. When available, I much prefer the personal property tax lists since they include almost every person who was taxable, even if they did not own land. Of course the land tax records are wonderful as well, but relying solely on those may exclude people you may be looking for. > [Original Message] > From: Patricia Kantzer <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 1/11/2006 2:19:53 PM > Subject: [VIRGINIA] Early Tax Record databases > > Does anyone know if there are pre-1790 tax records for Virginia that are online and searchable? > > > ============================== > Find your ancestors in the Birth, Marriage and Death Records. > New content added every business day.
