Haven't done much research on the computer for the last 3 weeks....between the flu and Christmas. Here is all that my book says about Taliaferro's Mill: p. 302 of COLONIAL CAROLINE: A History of Caroline County, Virginia by T. E. Campbell: Title: Grants by Spotswood of less than 1,000 acres to favorites: (year) 1719: Harry Beverley, Grantee, received 831 acres on Peumandsend, beginning at the flood gate of Taliaferro's Mill, at the east end of mill-pond. Not much of a description, but that's the entry. In 1711, a LAWRENCE TALIAFERRO received 220 acres in the upper valley of Peumandsend. Perhaps he had something to do with Taliaferro's Mill. On page 17 of the same book, it has this information about the earliest patents: "March 17, 1673, Robert Taliaferro, the son of Robert Taliaferro, 739 acres on the south side of the Rappahannock River on both sides of the mouth of a creek known as Peumansend. (Evidently at this time all of Mill Creek was called Peumansend)." On page 47, it states..."With church and school firmly established, and one trading center flourishing about Taliaferro's warehouse at the mouth of Mill Creek, and another flourishing about Buckner's tobacco warehouse further up the Rappahanock, Caroline's Rappahannock alley had the essential elements to sustain a high order of society." Page 62...."John Taliaferro has the distinction of being the scion of the first family to reach the soil that is Caroline and produce a founding father. His first Caroline Taliafero ancestor patented 6,300 acres jointly with Lawrence Smith on the south side of the Rappahannock below Snow Creek in 1666......At one session of court a few years after Caroline became a county, three of the five sitting magistrates were Taliaferros. MUCH much more about the Taliaferros in this book....way too much to type out. There must be at least 30 different Taliaferro names with numerous entries for some of them. I highly recommend this book......I found mine on Amazon.com. Happy New Year. I am a 7th geneartion Toliver descendnant proven from my Rev War ancestor Jesse Toliver of VA & NC, who married 'Franky' stamper of the NC Stampers of England... however, if you would not mind, i wouold still love to have any info-sketches/maps,etc included in the Caroline book you mentioned that deals with the Taliaferro Mill,etc...if you wouldnt mind after all this trime ?? i would appreciate it much!! also, i am keeping the Taliaferro family info & all, just in case i can help someone else. if youd care to see what i have, please let me know 7 ill get you some copies out soon as the hooidats will allow !
