Re my search for signatures: After a day spent doing Google searches, found Library of Congress' American Memory site at http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/index.html Using the search box in the upper right corner I entered "Botetourt" and found some early church petitions with signatures by men in Botetourt Co.
